firing sequence for 16v 9a engine

Post by Rick84 »

HI,

Does anyone have a diagram or a good explanation of the firing sequence for a 9a engine? I believe the rotor spins anti-clockwise and is 1-3-4-2 but where on the dis cap does no.1 go?

Thanks,

Rick

There is a groove in the dizzy next to the number 1 position. Think its around the 10 o'clock position from memory, not going outside to check now though! :hehe:

Get no.1 piston at tdc with the inlet and exhaust valves closed. the rotor arm will be pointing to no.1 lead.

Just re-read the original post. I'd replied thinking it was an 8v, so I've deleted my rubbish answer :D

Thanks lads, think if got it right now. Not running quite right yet but it hasn't turned over for 5 years before saturday! I've put a spark plug tester on each plug and they all seem to have a weak spark. I'm going to change the dis cap, rotor arm and HT leads to see if it gets stronger, if not do you think it could be the coil? problem is I have no MOT so can't get it to a garage to change cambelt and set up the timimg. Just trying to eliminate what I can on my own.

I'd be changing the cam belt before trying to start. If it's stood for 5 years it could have damage that you can't see with the eye until it's too late.

If it's running on kjet, and the kjet has been dormant for a long time, then you stand a good chance of having fuelling issues - either dead pumps or a stuck metering head. Can you hear the pump(s) priming? What age of car is it?

The engine is from a 1990 Passat I think. It primes, then fires up and runs ok now, but just dies when I take my foot off the accelerator. I'll change all the bits I mentioned before, plus fuel filter and see if it improves. Oh yeh, put shiny brand new plugs in and they went black within minutes.

Are you using the k-jet as found on 1.8 KR engines or are you using the KE-Motronic system that was fitted to the 9a in passats and corrados? Either way it could be worth unplugging the cold start valve incase that is dumping too much fuel in.

Have you got an ISV on it, and is it vibrating with the ignition switched on? Are all the temp senders on the end of the head connected - one of them is required for the ISV to work - can't remember which colour of wire it is.

Or (from my own back catalogue of mistakes) did you remember to attach the servo hose to the back of the manifold?

Working now, changed the coil and cleaned up the HT leads, made sure everything was plugged in. Doesn't stall anymore. Just taken it for a spin round the block sat on a bucket because it has no seats in! I can drive it to the garage now to get the cambelt done and get an MOT (probably after Christmas now). Got to paint the "whitecat" Badges, and get some bodywork done then hopefully get to some shows next year.
