Removing the bodykit

Post by Rocco Ben »

i really like the look of the early mk2s when they had no body kit. but i'vee seen it done to later models. like this:

anyhoo. could i take mine off and polish it up?
or am i wasting my time and looking for a disaster! :dash: (how is it stuck on?)

and if i do take it off and it goes wrong could i put it back on with too much drama?

cheers :)

Ben

Before you take it off, have a good feel around the insides of the wheel arches and look at the edges of the sills - if there's any feel of rough edges or signs of rustyness, leave the kit where it is unless you fancy some welding. It's easy enough to put it back, but I think you'll need some Tiger Seal or similar to stick it back in place.

as Ed says do check the arches.
i have just done this to an 87 GTX - see A20 GTX Project thread - but i had kept a careful eye on the inner wheel arches on a regular basis.

just got to get rid of all the gunk and in time the mounting holes for the kit will need to be filled at paintshop stage.

I had mine removed and the scrapes fixed, and then re-sprayed. The bodyshop said they used cheese wire to cut it off where it was joined to the body of the car.

liking the cheese wire technique! :beers:

Was thinking of this myself but felt my arches and they are going

Maybe a year down the line to save a bit of weight I will get the kit off and prepare for the worst.
I can only assume if there is rust coming from above the kit then it would be gone below it :(
