Cutting out (Fuel starvation I think)

Was told when I bought my Scirocco (MK2) that it only needed the fuel filler pipe fitting to get it running. I wasn't gullible enough to fall for that but for £102 it was still a bargin.

Fitted the filler pipe and replaced the fuel filter (which was black). It would move about 100 M before the revs would just die and the engine would stall.
My dad stripped the carb (weber) suspecting that the was crap in the bowl. In fact. the bowl was empty... no fuel.. nothing. Jets were all fine. nothing clogging them.


Rebuilt the carb and the problem didn't go away.

We traced the problem (I made tea and my dad raged at everything) to this part. Im sorry I have no idea what its called and I only have a vauge idea what it does



Seemingly there wasn't enough fuel getting through there. Blew all the fuel out and it was completley clean. But my dad inisted that this was the problem, so we changed it with one I had on my old mk2.

We drove it for about a mile and it didn't cut out. But it still sounds like a bear being molested. I cant explain it properly but when you start it (regardless of the position of the choke) It has a really dry sounds. Like a sore thoat.

Any way, if anyone could shed some light on the subject it would be much appreiciated. The cars only outside and I have a decen camera now so i'll do my best to fill any gaps.

i asume you have checked the fuel pump? if its not that im not sure as it sounds like thats the problem to me

Its a new fuel pump apparently. Will change it over with my old mk2 in any case on the off chance the new ones duff.

isent there one in the tank as well under the rear seat ? might be worth checking

Dude, the swirl pot thing that your dad says is the problem doesn't really need to be there. I dont run one because my car cuts out when its conected up. I just run the fuel line from the pump straight to the carb.

May be worth a shot?

As you have a carb'd car, pull that fuel gauge sender out the tank and you'll most likely find it is clogged with bits of rust.

Leave the swirl pot attached as it has a couple of jobs to do. Firstly prevent fuel starvation under high load, such as accelerating hard past a line of slow traffic, although the float chamber in the carb helps here too, secondly its the fuel return to the tank so it means you aren't trying to pressurise your carb with petrol where the only way out is into the engine and cause it to run rich, or any other way it can find down onto a nice hot exhaust manifold!

Just had a similar (ish) nightnmare with mine (92 GT 11 - weber, back part of stock air box(scrapped the warm air take up bit))- ran fine through gears 1,2,3&4 but in 5th at 50-60mph and accellerating, it stutterd, cut out, wouldn't start until it's stood for a minute or so, then fine till the next time...

Changed the rotten filler neck a few weeks back, put a new filter on, magnet-swept the bottom of the tank and still had the above problem. (It had a new fuel pump a couple of years ago... the only shiny thing under the bonnet!)

Changed the "swirl pot" (referred to in the haynes as a "fuel reservoir") this morning. (Main dealer part - £38 incl. VAT) Put all new fuel pipes on under the bonnet while I was at it and drove it home... And it still did it! (again, dying under load uphill in 5th at 55)

Just had the carb off and flushed it out with cleaner, and disconnected the cam box breather pipe from the air box (I reckon it was pulling oil through, traping dirt in it as it goes - i'll pop a little filter on the end of that pipe or something) and been out for a drive. Put it 5in th at 30, floored it and it happily went up to 70 without missing a beat.

Thought i'd post this up in case it's some use.
