Clutch cable mk2 scirocco

Post by MattR2020 »

Hey all, have a scirocco mk2 1.8 8v 1990. Today i had issues changing gear, hear 1 and 2 mainly. Cruised it back in third. Turned off engine and now cant change gear at all. Checked clutch cable and noticed its got frayed cabling, also after the bulkhead bung on metal housing cable has totally ripped through inner housing. End guide around cable to pedal has ripped through also. Pulled it all out now trying to replace the cable but they seem mega hard to find online. Vw heritage parts have one for up to 1992 models with a length of 1490 but this is out of stock, also they have one for sciroccos up to 1983 with a length of 1615... Im wondering can i fit the 1615 and will my clutch pedal still function as it should?

If you have ripped a hole in the bulk head where the clutch cable goes through you need to make a strengthening plate to repair the bulk head, it’s a rubbish design from VW and a common problem on all right hand drive car.
There is a plate for the Mk1 Golf to give you an idea of how they look but the Mk1 Golf plate won’t fit the Mk2 Scirocco.

Have a search on line for how others have fixed the Mk2 Scirocco bulk head problem.

Re the cable itself, the parts diagrams suggest 534721335 is the correct part for RHD Sciroccos from 1996 model year (also for 1.6 engines prior to that). Heritage state the length is 1680 but VW Classic Parts state 1450. How is cable length defined anyway? Might that be 1680 cable and 1450 sleeve by any chance? I have one on its way as a spare so will confirm length when it arrives.

Prior to 1986 model year, the stated length for RHD apparently varied according to the engine - 1457 for the 1.3, 1216 for the 1.5/1.6, 1470 for the 1.8 Injection and 1490 for the 1.8 carb. I guess VW's decision to rationalise length from 1986 could be taken as an admission that exact length doesn't matter much. The angle of bend at the bulkhead is likely more relevant.

My genuine 534721335 cable has arrived from VW Classic Parts. The overall length, from the pedal hook to the rivet at the clutch end, is approx 1640. The length of the sleeve from the bulkhead aperture to the adjuster flange on its shortest setting measures 1360:

Within reason, departure from this length would affect the curvature of the cable through the engine bay, but shouldn't significantly affect function.
