Instrument cluster replacement

Hi, I'm thinking of replacing the instrument cluster on my mk2 Scala. The speedo is working, but not the odometer, everything else on the cluster works fine. Could I use just the speedo clock from another cluster. How easy is it to remove? And could I use one from a jetta or golf?

The parts diagrams show the speedo/odometer unit as an individual part. It looks like you should be able to transfer a speedo module from any other Scirocco Mk2 instrument cluster, as long as the maximum speed on the dial is the same. The part numbers all start with "53", so they are likely specific to the Scirocco.

Dismantling the instrument cluster is a fiddly job, and care needs to be taken not to damage delicate parts. From memory, removing the cluster from the binnacle is straightforward.

No need to replace the speedo as it’s probably the cog on the end is slipping on the shaft, a blob of super glue can fix the problem.

I guess this thread illustrates why odometer readings on cars without documented history should not be relied on.

Yes same with only old car really as they are so easy to clock by running a drill on the cable or remove all the cogs and fitting any mileage you want.

Past MOT’s online are very helpful to check mileage.

Yes, checking mileage from MOT history on the Gov website is very easy to do. It is surprising how many older cars I see advertised for sale online where the mileage reading is quoted in the advert despite a clear discrepancy showing on the MOT mileage history. Where a trader does this, as is sometimes the case, they are committing a criminal offence, as they are obliged by law to make all reasonable checks.

However, the main problem area is likely to be prior to MOT computerisation in 2006, and even more so before 1997, when the National Mileage Register was set up by HPI. Up to the 90s, "clocking" was known to be rife, both within the trade and by so-called "private" sellers.

According to an article in the Independent from 1996, Trading Standards estimated that 1 in 4 used cars for sale had been clocked. According to HPI after falling, that figure is rising again, mainly due to fraud by private owners coming to the end of their PCP or lease, and is now estimated at 1 in 11 of used cars.
