Drove from Brighton to Birmingham yesterday on the first leg of a pre-Christmas tour and broke down twice (M25 and M40) and now wondering what to do as I’m away from home with no tools and no local VW specialist to help me.
I have a Weber carb. Before I left the car was stalling if I put the choke in, and with the choke out the revs were all over the place. Took it to my local guy who put compressed air through the carb jets and maybe a fuel line as well, and that fixed the problem.
But then as soon as I hit the M25 the car lost power and was completely unresponsive when I put my foot down. I limped to the services at 30mph and managed to rev the engine and clear it. RAC were a 5 hour wait, and the car was running ok again so I set off and after another 60 miles the same thing happened. Again I managed to clear it, on the hard shoulder this time. Made it to Birmingham but it happened again close to my destination.
Obviously this isn’t safe, and I have a lot more driving to do over the next week on less accommodating roads.
Does anyone please have a recommendation in Birmingham for someone who could sort it out? Ideally on Monday, but at a push I could leave the car here and hire one for the rest of my trip.
It had a new petrol tank 18 months ago, I will try to replace the fuel filter today. The air filter is a couple of months old. Presumably this is debris blocking the carb? but my knowledge is scant.
Please hit me with your Birmingham recommendations. Thanks!
