Partslink is mainly to access the official parts diagrams, but also provides factory data specific to your VIN number, You can register and pay for access (24 hours upwards) here:

If your VIN number has "NK" before the last six digits, this would confirm it is a latest model year car (N for 92, K for Karmann factory). Another clue is that the last UK GT IIs came with factory fitted electric windows and central locking.

The last 6 digits of the VIN is the production sequence number, so the higher the number the later the car. The GT II McMad mentioned in the 2011 thread, registered on 1 August 1993, is the latest type 53 VIN number I've heard of registered in the UK. My GT II, also registered on 1 Aug 93, is around 300 cars earlier in the production sequence.

It would be interesting to find out if any remaining K or L registered GT II's can beat McMad's NK004280 VIN sequence.
Well, every day is a school day. My last two letters before the 6 digits are DK = 1982 Karmann.. Who knew...

D is actually 1983 model year as there is no "I" year code - as for registration prefixes/suffixes, some letters are skipped to avoid confusion with numbers.

A useful guide to VW VIN codes is here:

Interesting, as the confirmed date she rolled off the line was 5th Nov 1982.

Yes, that would be an '83 model year as traditionally VW switched over to production of the new model year after the summer shutdown in time for an autumn launch, though these days it seems to happen even earlier in the year - nobody wants to be lumbered with last year's model!

Got it thank you. So all cars are actually older than they claim to be... Must have been a woman who came up with that 🤣

Hello -
Just dropped in to look up some information and I noticed this post. I will confirm that much of what GT_II says is correct in that I am the owner of a VW Scirocco GT MKII 1800 8 valve RHD, chassis No. 004280, which, according to VW was built on the 30.06.1992 was the LAST Scirocco of its type (RHD) to be produced. However LHD Scirroco`s (and possibly "specials" - and good luck with that!) continued to be produced after this date.
It was shipped to a UK dealer in the NE and sold in Aug.1993. It is currently off the road and plans for it are uncertain.
I hope that this information is helpful to someone since, as has been pointed out, chasing it down with VW becomes expensive. I did post a considerable amount of information on this subject in 2012 (and in particular on "The Penultima") but this was taken down for reasons best known to the person who took it down.
I am no longer active on this forum but if you would particularly like to discuss this further, message me with phone number (preferably a land line) and I will be happy to chat.
Cheers, John

PS to above -
Just to clarify on GT_II`s comments on the "Penultima", the chassis No. is in fact 004274. The car (K395 UNH) was owned in 2012 by glen66 and in the latter of his two post there is a link to some photo`s. The car is currently taxed and MOT`d and presumably on the road so I am a little surprised that members have not come across it.

Well this member certainly knows of its existence. Read about it first in the UK VW/Audi magazine and have seen it in the flesh a couple of times at the Register annual meet.

The website telling you how to break down a car chassis is spot on, tying in perfectly for mine. I wrote to VW back in 1998 asking about my car and got a very detailed letter back.

My car arrived in the UK (Grimsby port) on Live Aid Day, 13.07.1985 having been produced earlier that year in Osnabruck.

Happy days.
