CABIN AIR EXTRACTION

In my Scirocco Mk2, there appears to be no means for air to be extracted out when moving. I remember on other older cars I have had. There was always a sneaky hidden air vent in the rear of the car to suck stale air out. some cars even made quite a thing of them with chrome grills or similar. Just always found my car to be stuffy. Anybody Know?

I remember my 1995 polo 6N having the pressure vents just behind the rear bumper. I haven’t seen this type of vent on the 53B other than in the lower part of the doors, under the door pocket. There must be something in place to exhaust air, especially when using the heater controls. My 1991 scirocco smells just the same as my 1984 scirocco. Not a musty smell, but just the same odour from cloth and leather. [emoji106]

Yes, the air exits through the grilles in the rear edge of the front doors, via the slot just below the door cards. From memory, there is a rubber flap hanging inside the door to let the air flow through the slot into the door and act as a non-return valve - maybe those flaps have been sealed up in an attempt to stop leaks.

yes as gt_II says its very easy to cover these up in an attempt to seal up leaks
this is one of the reasons i fit my plastic membrane on the inside of the door
definitely worth checking

Had a brief look at my door. Its clever how at a glance, you would never know there's a vent under there. when its not dark or raining , will have a good look. See if its as it should be. Thanks to all who replied .

If you need fit a new sheet of polythene use butyl sealer on a roll. It’s what I used when I couldn’t get the original sealer to cooperate. Use it around the openings to avoid water damage.
Look around for a good price and the size you want.

Checked the flaps and vent in the doors. They were ok not blocked if anything a bit stuck open. However have recently sealed with silicone the under bonnet metal moulding. To stop fumes from engine bay via that, through to air vents. But most significantly adjusted my bonnet to pull down harder at the hinge end. this seems to have stopped the fumy smells coming in via the heater. by squeezing down better on the new plenum chamber/engine bay rubber strip. squirted a load of fabreaze aerosol into bonnet vents with the heater blasting. To freshen up the heater. Weirdly it seemed to lubricate the bearing as it now runs quieter. hopefully my stuffy interior might well be cured.
