VW birth certificate
VW birth certificate
Hi guys,
I have been trying to find out when the last mk2 models were made, my GTII is 06/1992 but have heard of some being as late registered as 1993. Can anyone shed any light on this please?
Also, had anyone bought a ' birth certificate ' from VW classic parts company? I was forwarded a link from Ben at VW Heritage but at £100 it seems quite expensive for not that much information! [url][/https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de ... ikate.html]

Re: VW birth certificate
After 291.497 Scirocco's MK2 were built the last one rolled off the productionline on the 7th of September 1992.
That some cars are registered later is probably because they did not sell that good anymore in the end and stood in the showroom quite long.

A similar thread from 2011 is here:
http://forum.sciroccoregister.co.uk/vie ... 993#p73270
If your VIN number has "NK" before the last six digits, this would confirm it is a latest model year car (N for 92, K for Karmann factory). Another clue is that the last UK GT IIs came with factory fitted electric windows and central locking.
The last 6 digits of the VIN is the production sequence number, so the higher the number the later the car. The GT II McMad mentioned in the 2011 thread, registered on 1 August 1993, is the latest type 53 VIN number I've heard of registered in the UK. My GT II, also registered on 1 Aug 93, is around 300 cars earlier in the production sequence.
It would be interesting to find out if any remaining K or L registered GT II's can beat McMad's NK004280 VIN sequence.

Re: VW birth certificate
Well, the "Penultima" should qualify - if the very last one was NK010000 then the Penultima should be NK009999?
Re: VW birth certificate
Some good information here boys, would be interesting to see how many L reg Motors are still in existence!
Re: VW birth certificate
With the last one being built in 31/7/1992, and with the chassis as NKO10000, would I be correct in saying there were 10,000 models made? My chassis number is NK004241
Thoughts?

Re: VW birth certificate
NK010000 was it seems a 16V "special", presumably the reason for the round number, likely this one at the Karmann museum (courtesy Redrum):
I doubt the regular production number went much higher than NK004280. Mine, at just under NK004000, has a production date of early June 92, which suggests 4,280 was made around early July, not much before the summer shutdown.
I found the production date for mine last year from Partslink24 (around a tenner for 1 day access), so presumably the same info should be available free of charge (at least for later cars) from the parts department of your friendly VW dealer.

Re: VW birth certificate
It looks like yours didn't hang around at all before registration, likely built late June. Maybe a factory order for a picky customer or a pre-reg to meet a dealer's sales target?

Great info there mate, will definitely check the history now.
I have manual windows and realise the latter models have electric units, but there can't be many left I reckon.

The "Penultima" - widely acknowledged to be the 2nd to last one off the production line is registered 1st September 1992. I wonder if it's actually the 2nd to last RHD one?

Re: VW birth certificate
Ok, as owner of a late GT II, curiosity got the better of me, and I trawled through some of the mass of manufacturing data available on Partslink24. It seems VW have only uploaded data for Sciroccos made from around mid December 1991, so not the complete 1992 model year.
In total, 5,114 '92 model year Sciroccos were built, the last one being the Alpine white GT II 16V loaded with extras displayed in the Karmann museum, with VIN number WVWZZZ53ZNK005114, which finished production on 7 September 1992. What VW have not publicised is that production apparently continued for another two weeks after that on quite a few standard GT IIs with lower VIN numbers, the last couple of stragglers not finishing production until 21 September 1992.
The very last RHD Scirocco finished production on 30 June 1992. I suspect this was because Euro 1 emissions came into force on 1 July 92 and it would have been illegal to manufacture non-catalyst cars from this date. The last RHD Scirocco had VIN number WVWZZZ53ZNK004280, which surprisingly is the one McMad mentioned he owned in the 2011 thread I linked to above, L590 TBR in Pearl grey metallic. I notice from the GOV website this car has been off the road since 2013, and wonder if it might come back at some point.
So then, the "Penultima" Scirocco, the one before last. If this was based on the RHD car with the preceding RHD VIN number, this would be WVWZZZ53ZNK004274, also in Pearl grey metallic, which finished production on 29 June. Or would you pick one of the 4 other Sciroccos with earlier VIN numbers that finished production on 30 June, three in Pearl grey (4267, 4261, 4234) and 1 in Flash red (4226)?
Roccoman's Scirocco (VIN ending 4241) also finished production on 29 June 1992, so one of the last. According to the data, this is in Brilliant black metallic and originally came with electric windows as fitted to other late GT IIs.
A small caveat to all of this, I manually extracted the RHD data, VIN by VIN, so it is possible I missed one or two RHD cars in my search.
For a bit of fun, here's a pie chart showing the paint colours of the last 139 RHD Sciroccos (from VIN 3751, which was built 21 May 1992):

Re: VW birth certificate
This is fantastic info here! My gtII ending in 4241 has manual windows, and have heard someone elsewhere mention about electric units, so this is worth pursuing for me! The car came from a Dub fanatic who had 12 dubs in a collection of roccos, golfs mk1,2 and 3. So its possible they might have been swapped at some point. Will definitely have to check out Partslink24. Have you a web address or suchlike?GT_II wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 10:52 pm Ok, as owner of a late GT II, curiosity got the better of me, and I trawled through some of the mass of manufacturing data available on Partslink24.
