Hi,

That's one for the later DX Injected 8 valve cars - I'd love to take it off your hands because VW Heritage will be able to arrange a new production of that exact cable - it's largely been NLA for a few years.

The carbed cars have the longer cables as standard. 1660mm iirc.

Let me know what you'd like to do with the 1490mm one.

Thanks.

A bit of a minefield. OEMPC gives this information, based on the original microfiche, though certainly not infallible:

http://www.oemepc.com/vw/part_single/ca ... 702/lang/e

This suggests all late (1986 model year on) rhd cars are fitted with 534721335, which is 1216mm long. Prior to that injection models were fitted with 172721335H, 1470mm long, 1.8 carbs were fitted with 532721335J, 1490mm long and 1.6 carbs were fitted with the 534721335 (1216mm). I wouldn't want to put any money on this being 100% accurate.

I guess in reality these differences are not that critical, just altering the radius of curvature slightly to line up with convenient clipping points.

172 and 532 at the beginning of a part number denote RHD specific parts so probably right.

I checked the 534 part number and I found aftermarket equivalents that show 1660mm as the length.

Confusingly, Volkswagen Classic Parts say 534721335 has a length of 1450mm and VW Heritage 1680mm. So we have 1216mm, 1450mm, 1660mm and 1680mm all supposedly for the same part. I wonder if it depends how you define length?

One thing I can confirm is that 172 721 335 H - described as 1470mm K-Jetronic up to chassis 53F (sometime in 1985) is actually 1470mm - as I have a NOS one in front of me.

Derek - I have a brand new Eicher clutch cable from Euro Car Parts (and also a used Gemo one)

https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/eicher-c ... -646440211

if you want to swap (they both measure 1660mm)

I can then pass yours to Sean ^^^ to then pass to VWH.

This is the part number you would need from 1986 and up 534721335.
No lenght is mentioned in ETKA

Drawing number 25 and 26 for you to check.

I've just been mucking around with clutch cables. Mine suddenly developed the grinding feeling and stiffness, along with a rasping sound. I would say the chances are it's the metal cable rubbing against the hole in the bulkhead, and possibly starting to fray. Get underneath the pedals with a torch and look up at where the clutch cable comes through.

If so, then the reason is, I would suspect, that they have not seated the grommet in to the hole. It's a rubber plug on the end of the curvy metal pipe at the bulkhead end of the cable. I've noticed a lot of people have trouble with this. You can't push it in with the hand or anything else. What worked for me was dabbing a little grease on it, roughly seating it by hand then pressing the clutch pedal a few times with the cable adjusted to tight, and that seated it nicely through the hole. I made the same mistake last time a put a cable in which was about 8 years ago on the roadside, because mine snapped (for the reason above). Couldn't get the grommet in the bulkhead, so kind of let it sit against it, worked fine but the cable frayed on the hole - noticed it the other day.

Also, the other end, you need to check that the cable runs through a rubber guide/grommet that sits underneath the disc adjuster (gearbox end of the cable). A kind of mushroom shaped thing that sits in the hole. Otherwise, it will fray on that hole. Check the cable pathway here, it should point down at a good straight angle. If it sits diagonally at all, it'll probably eat through the rubber guide, I would bet.

Mine has a kind of clip attached to the front of the rocker cover which the cable sits in, and that seems to sort the pathway on mine out quite well.

I just got a Gemo cable from ebay for about a tenner, and the rubber guide for the gearbox end was a few quid. Relatively easy job, but quirky. It's one of those jobs that I can imagine a garage screwing up.

Speaking from experience, clutch should feel pretty smooth, although not the lightest clutch in the world. Any friction or grinding, good chance it could be the cable not quite set up right.
