Drive Shaft

Post by scrumpyone »

Got some clunking & creaking noises from the steering. Mechanic diagnosed universal joint. Ordered part from VW, they sent wrong one. It seems I require part number 532419951B Drive Shaft.

Can anyone help please? It's a MK2 GT2

The UJ is not a drive shaft. Drive shafts run from gearboxes to driven wheels or Diffs.

The UJ connects your steering rack to your steering column.

You cannot buy these new anywhere.

But this part will be the same for all RHD A1 chassis cars. Any mk1, mk2 scirocco, mk1 golf, mk1 caddy etc

VW Classic parts in Germany have 4 left in stock:

https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de ... e&dir=desc

Mecatecnic in France can get them in and charge cheaper postage, if you're not in a hurry:

Ordered one from Heritage Parts Centre for £127.

There was a used option on fleabay for £80 but I decided not to risk it.

The UJ is so expensive for such a small bit of metal...

It's not a drive shaft scrumpyone was looking for - that's just VW's sloppy translation! He was looking for what I think you would call the steering column flexible coupling rod.

Well, VW Classic Parts had 4 RHD ones on 25 July, now they have sold out. So the links have expired. You have to act quickly on some of these rare parts! I wonder if they are on their way to Heritage Parts Centre (currently showing out of stock)?
