How do i tell if my Mk1 is a Storm or not

Post by Winston »

Ive just purchased a 79 Mk1 from ebay.. The car came with lots or history and i think its on the register already after looking at the paper work.. The reg is LAT 65V

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

Its on the log book as a GLi but it is on the register card as a Mk1 Storm

It has the storm interior and ive got old pictures of the car with storm writen down the side... back before it had some resto work done in 1989

Were any of the cars converted to Storms when they hit the uk or do you think it just had the bits fitted as extras?

Any help would be great and thanks to anyone i spoke to at VW fest at weekend... Im still very new to all this you will have to bear with me

Cheers

Hi Winston,

It depends what the original colour was (I see it had a respray)...
Any clues from the photo's of the resto?
See here for Storm spec...

Ive just read a print out that came with the car on storms.... the car is bright red in the pictures before its resto in 89

So its not a storm colour :dunno: .. not a storm on paper...but spec wise its as good as haha

As long as you are happy that's the main thing - lots of people get hung up on spec's of cars...

Corrado Storms are a good example.
I had a VR6 Corrado with leather - and I thought my colour was better than the 'Storm' colour options.

EDIT for the Dark Burgandy Metallic...

Very good comment Ryan. I would have loved to have seen a Mk1 Storm in Indiana red. It would have gone really well with the tan leather interior. :ok:

Back on topic, I'm guessing that your car is a GLI, but with a retro fitted Storm interior. That's pretty cool, I can't remember the last time a saw a GLI. Rarer than a Storm me thinks.

You saw one at Stanford Hall Richie :yup: but true observation, not many GLi's on the register.

ha ha ha... nice one piglet, though with the amount of facelifts that car has had it is easy to forget it started life as a GLi.

OT though many early storms were marked up as GLis on the logbook but I don't think this is one, although I could be wrong...

^ I would second what he said. I dont know as it helps with proof either way, but I had a Storm that was listed on log book as a Gli, and it was definitely a storm

Storm or GLi the car has some pretty unique history... Im just missing the first 10 years of its life.. In which time it got very rusty and was donated all the storm bits, I would love to know the story behind that haha

Cheers for the replys :mafia:
