New Member 83 GL Auto

Post by RussGLAuto »

Hi all,

Firstly, great website, lots of useful info!

Just purchased what appears to sadly be a rare model, an 83 GL Auto. This was my first car back in 1990, although that was a Cosmos Blue example with reg JGE 600Y (Glasgow) which fell off the radar back in 1998. I had it for three years and had to sell as the insurance went through the roof... If anyone knows what happened to her let me know.

Regretted selling ever since and been looking for years for this or one like it, and finally found JWC 56Y a couple of months ago. She is in astonishing original condition, Diamond Silver with just 48k on the clock. Rust free all but for a few stone chips. Looks like the hidden bits have been rust protected all over too.

Immaculate inside and I dare say in better nick than the one I had in 1990. A few bits to attend to, but all in hand. Just had a full service and MOT. Eventually passed after a fog lamp and break balance sorted out.

Anyway, look forward to posting if I have any sticking points.

Russ

That looks a very tidy example in original condition and single front wiper, what are your plans with it?

Thank you Mark, it really is a time warp this car.

The seats don't even look like they have been used! Plans? Bring it back to full originality in the first instance. There is a list to do, but nothing major. Alloy wheel finish is lifting in places, I bought an original London MR21 top spec Blaupunkt radio cassette which fits perfectly but I can't find the speaker wires. Best part is a full VW Audi service history has come with it.

Anyway, just enjoy it I think. Weekend toy as you put it.

very nice. good to see another single wiper car, especially as it still has the correct bonnet.

Like your homework!

Well, the garage didn't like the fact that between the filler neck and the tank there has been a none standard blue hose fitted. They were unsure if it was fuel compatible. They also thought the fuel filler neck was a home made job from exhaust pipe and the filler cap, which is a breathable one I think doest fit properly.

Probably why my garage stinks of fuel... :-( Waiting for Peter at VW Classic to find the bits for me to replace the whole sh'bang.

Yes, the 2009 MOT tester should have gone to spec-savers! Should have read 44,740....

Hi, you must have a 6th sense! VW Classic Peter has just got back to me saying they don't make them any longer.

I would absolutely be in the market for one of your stainless necks and hose. Do you sell caps to fit, or should my original be OK please? Let me know when you have them in stock and will order one.

I'm guessing my 83 is a 40 ltr tank.

Thanks for your help.

I shall let you know when they are available. the original caps fit, just need to lube up the rubber seal on underside of the cap sometimes as they can be a little stiff at first.

Hi Tom,

The plot thickens...

So, have attached a couple of shots of the filler cap. Mine does not have a rubber seal, and have just discovered it is that loose I can remove it even when locked... any comments?

That said, still need to clear the advisory on the filler neck and hose.

Thanks again.

If you have a full size spare wheel you have the smaller 40l fuel tank and if you have a space saver spare wheel then you have the later tank, easest way to tell...

Common problem with fuel filler neck as they are in the firing line for mud, salt and water so they don’t last long from factory and cause all sorts of problems with the fuel system, especially with fuel injection cars but not much a problem with carb cars.

Lots of info and different methods of filler necks as VW sold out years ago of replacement filler necks, stainless steel is the way to go as they should last. :-D

Mmm, in this day and age it would be subject of a recall. Stainless it is. And a trip to Halfords for a new filler cap! Being an early model I have a full size spare alloy so 40 ltrs it must be.

Great how there has been so much help in just a day on this forum!

Many thanks 8-)

Russ
