That’s the aim Mark.
It can definitely handle the trip, I just want to get it tidied up a bit and think of a way of delivering sounds without cutting the door cards...

After a series of lost weekends it's been good to spend the afternoon pottering with the new Mk1.
It's a real cross-over car as I've been discovering in light of need to fit a new rad.
Signs of a previous bodge...
New Rads an issue too - this is the nearest I could track down.
There's been a coolant leak - the Crazy Quiffs supplied silicone hose kit came with a water pump to metal pipe hose that wouldn't fit and it's been a minor mission to I.D. the correct standard hose.
#1 = Old one - slighty leaking
#2 = the one that fitted,121 047 009 SKU 027121063C @ £2.33 from VWH
#3 = a standard one that didn't fit - 119 121 0048 SKU 05512106A @ £12.55 from VWH
So - it seems different EG code engines do have different sized outlets on the water pump.
Luckily had a few of these lying around - fan cowling on car too large for the new rad...
Biggest issue - new rad has these feet as per later cars...
Had to reduce them in size with a hacksaw in order to match up properly to per-drilled holes in front bulkhead..
Had a couple of these to help mount properly...
And need to modify the top mount a bit - until then it's a cable tie.. but pleased the return to bottle hose is now in the correct position.
Have sourced a full set of new headlamp bulb covers and new drivers/passenger side mirrors and a manifold to servo vacuum hose.
Wider to do list:
odometer and tripometer
rear bushes
ns track rod split
fit sill trims
new windscreen
speedo cable seal
front bearings
rear box mounts
new brake hoses, rear cylinders, brake fluid
fit new front wiper motor
And I'm definitely bored of the standard look/height - Type 5's, coilovers and Kbar going on ASAP.
And a standard front spoiler kindly supplied by Mark Hughes 'g60mark'.

Just wasn't happy with the compromised mounting of the new rad so, more research uncovered this one...
Much better...
utilized the orginal cowling.
invested in a new switch
All back together.
However - now there's an issue with the fan not kicking in when bleeding the system...
Fan works with the switch wires engaged together but whether with the new switch or even the old one tried the temp gauge shoots up and coolant flows out...

Cheers squire.
I've solved the overheating issue - there was a built in plug on the outlet to the 8mm return hose that needed punching out...
Never seen that before on any radiator...
Anyway - car is now driveable.

Re: Gitanes phase 2 - not another Baikal 81GTI?
good work- how on earth did you discover that 525mm rad with the mk1 type mountings? it looks Turkish or something!
also who would even think to look down the pipe to see if it was actually open, you take that for granted right

Re: Gitanes phase 2 - not another Baikal 81GTI?
Left the Mk1 with the Phirm a few weeks ago and picked it up today.
Huge visual change just from adding a front spoiler, the chrome sill trims refitted and the AP Coilovers taken from the old car.
The new stainless steel Jetex is a huge improvement afte the stupidly loud system car came with - needed tweaking because this one has some sort of four branch manifold on.
New Goodrich brakelines/fluid, rear cylinders, short shift, superpro rear bushing, new servo hose, various track rod/front bearings/refresh, a windage tray plus a new larger capacity (later) sump and a tune up - running beautifully.
New screen on order and still need to sort a headlamp upgrade loom too but this one coming together v nicely.
Front os wing needs to be rehung - it's been off at some point to address some inner wing issues.

So, these spotlights clearly wrong, the metal bulb covers I bought wouldn’t fit.
Sourced a pair on new ones for a good price and happily they’ve got the correct press/twist attach points.
A bank holiday weekend job to look forward to.

The spot lamp saga Just concluded.
Some tweaking to connectors needed.
Car had been running with h4 bulbs in the non standard lamps.
No more goggle e eye Rocco.
Also sorted the lack of intermittent, happily it was just a question of removing a white plastic plug to allow the wiper stalk to enter intermittent position.

Definitely an improvement and everything works too!...
Swapped out the mucky coolant bottle and added a VW coolant cap too.
Much deserved wash and quick summer evening blast.
Very happy with this old car.
