Need Help after attempted theft MK2 Scala

Post by Nuckleduster »

Hi all, been hanging aroung this forum for many years and have found info very helpfull. Have owned mk2 sciroccos for 20 years now and have done perhaps everyjob possible. Would you believe it some idiot tried to pinch my wife`s MK2 Dragon Green injection Scala during that high winds and snow blizzards we have all had. The idiot levered up the tilt and slide sunroof to gain access to the car but the steering lock stopped it bieng stolen. It is now off the road untill I can look at the damage to the mechanism. I was wondering if any member has any sunroof bits I can purchase. I have looked on ebay but there is someone selling at prices I am not about to pay (goes by the name of SAVERBITS). I have a rolling shell MK2 with no rust including a DX engine (bare)and 5 speed box.Only trouble is the axle is bent.It was my wife`s daily ride until she had a mishap--bought the dragon green one as a doner but decided to put it back on the road and use the daily ride as a doner--available for beer money and will need a trailer to take away. this would suit someone with a rotten MK2 that needs a decent shell. Open to offers. I also have 2 original alloys with good tires on them that I will part with. I hope that I can catch the idiot and have pre-booked his bed in the local hospital.--soo angry!!!! Best Wishes to all Gerry

Hi Gerry,

That's so bad to hear :( and they picked the sunroof out of all places! I've had endless issues with the sunroof on mine and they aren't cheap to get hold of either. I do have random parts from about 3 sunroofs now however so if you let me know what bits you need i can take a look.

I do have a full panel as well but its not in amazing condition. But let me know what parts you need bud and ill see what i have and send you some pictures.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. As yet I am not sure what is needed, but I know thw guides are toast. The last ones I made from plate ally 4mm thick and they worked well until the git tried to pinch the car. I bought the car with a duff sunroof but with a bit of tenacity and making new guides I got the roof working perfectly.Looking at the lid I will definately need the hinged u shaped piece that has the height adjusters on it. This is held on to the lid with 4 short screws(2 each side) and has the height adjuster in the middle of them. The plastic/nylon ends are broken and the support brackets are bent. The slides I can make again if needed. The car is on the drive at the moment with a green tarp ducktaped over the hole so I dont know how much of the mech has been damaged. Anything I can`t get I`ll have to make (I am a reasonably good fabricater) My misses has owned Scala`s for 21 years and she is heartbroken at the damage to her prize possession.---Gerry

If it helps I have a Mk2 golf sunroof. The lifter arms are toast but everything else should be good.

Hi Eagle 1,thanks for the reply. I know that some of the Golf sunroofs are the same as the Scirocco`s. Is the one you have the tilt and slide sunroof as there were 2 types fitted to the MK1 and Mk2 golfs. The early type is tilt and slide which is the one that is damaged and the other type is the tilt only which is a different sunroof altogether.I believe that some early passats had the same tilt and slide roof but I may be mistaken.Best Wishes Gerry

Hi Gerry, it's tilt only I'm afraid and the wife says you can't have the Scirocco one. Hope you get sorted.

Thanks Eagle 1 for the replies, I don`t know wheather the tilt one could be adapted to fit. Will have a look through my sunroof manual which details the different versions of the roofs fitted to the VWs--Gerry

given that the thief has tried this method once they might come back again.
if yu can't get the bits maybe it might be a good idea to blank it out completely.
i riveted a sheet of steel over mine which was a bit of a hash job but you could glue a panel to the inside then another the same thickness as the out skin and fill the gaps. then you can paint the roof so you will never know it was there.
you will gain precious head room too:)

Hey Gerry,

I thought it was easier just to send you picture of what I have as you can also see the condition and we can take it from there.

Hi jack, It looks as though you have the bits I need. I can come down tomorrow with some money and the bits you need. How much shall I bring. If it is possible for tomorrow please give me address and post code.I am keen to get the car back on the road so I don`t have to carry on "Driving Miss Daisy" ie ferrying the misses about. I have found the old tilt and slide guide parts that I used to make up the new guides in the workshop yesterday and have ordered some ally plate to remanufacture them as I did when I got the car--Best Wishes Gerry
