Hi everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself and my shedrocco
Hi everyone I have a rat look scirocco mk2 that I use daily. I bought it as a non runner In January 2016 it had been off the road since 1999.
This is what it looked like when I first got it -
I bought it for £300 off someone who was going to banger race it. Lucky it needed to much work to get it running so they sold it to me.
The car turned over and would run on easy start but the carb was goosed and the fuel tank was full of rust and petrol that was nearly as old as me. I replaced many parts to get it running and road worthy the list is pretty big.
New fuel tank, sender unit, fuel filler neck, lift pump, timing belt, cam and crank seals, fan belt, bottom pulley, spark plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor, I got a second hand pooburg carby(I later on changed it for a Webber).
I got it running but I also had trouble on the coolant side of things first of all there was a core plug missing on the back of the engine. the one on the inlet manifold had a hole in it the header tank had a crack in it and the water pump had a wobbly bearing. So I fixed all of the above.
I then concentrated on getting it to stop so I put new discs and pads on the front along with new flexis and copper brake pipes and took the drums off the rear and all was good just needed a little adjustment and new wheel bearings.
I also had a lot of electrical problems like the wipers not working, heater blower not working, screenwah pump, lights and indicators needed going through, clean some earths and change a few bulbs, relays and fuses pretty standard stuff for a car that had been abandoned for 17 years.
There are some other stuff that I've forgotten about and stuff like exhaust centre section, battery, wipers, oil and filters and tyres etc
After a few months I got it mot'ed and was driving it daily. One thing I did notice that wasn't working once I started driving it was the odometer. It's stuck on a 186k so god knows how many miles this thing has done.
Now here are some more recent pictures-
My plan with this car is to use it daily. Get some coilovers and maybe some nicer wheels and go to a few meets this summer. I'm going to use it until the mot runs out in October then I'm going to keep it in my unit and swap the engine for a tdi lump.

Hello and welcome!
Pretty rare colour "Capri Blue" - add to that no bodykit and small rear spoiler and you have a very nice base for a project.
Shame someone removed the inner light blanks as they're quite hard to get hold of now.

I have one of the inner light blanks inside the car. Shame the other is missing.

some would say thats an advantage on a low mileage insurance policyXUD9TE wrote: After a few months I got it mot'ed and was driving it daily. One thing I did notice that wasn't working once I started driving it was the odometer. It's stuck on a 186k so god knows how many miles this thing has done.
.
its very common on these for the odometer to stop clocking up miles.
theres a little gear on the end of a spindle carrying the numbers, the gear is supposed to be stuck onto the spindle but often it comes loose so the gear goes round but because the spindle isnt turning the mileage doesnt go up.
not that people will admit it but it does make you wonder how many low mileage sciroccos are because of this reason as the mot history will back up the "low mileage".
to fix it you can take apart the clocks and either glue it with superglue or do what i did and pull the gear of the spindle and butcher the spindle with a pair of pliers to rough it up then stick the gear back on giving something for it to grip onto.
I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

i really like the way that looks so i would leave it alone if you can.
i don think ive seen to many blue ones??
i would love to run my rocco as a daily again, but the state of cars and driving these days actually worries me to take it out nowadays.

Everyone is trying to convince me to respray it but I'm dead set on leaving it as it is and rocking the rat look.james butler wrote:bu the way nice rocco

I've only seen two other blue ones with no body kit pop up on eBay since I've had this one, so they must be pretty rare.
The reason I'm using this daily is the insurance is dirt cheap compared to other cars I had. I had a Leon pd150 and that was £200 a month to insure. I sold the car not long after buying it and put my Rocco back on the road.

I'll ring my insurance tomorrow and see if fitting coilovers will increase my premium. If it doesn't affect it by much I'll be ordering a set of coilovers Friday. The suspension is pretty tired on the car and a set of coilovers works out cheaper than a set of standard shocks and springs

They work out cheaper than springs and shocks as they may be rock hard and shake your fillings out!XUD9TE wrote:The suspension is pretty tired on the car and a set of coilovers works out cheaper than a set of standard shocks and springs
Most people I know how have fitted cheapo coil overs have soon regretted it, as Mr Funk on here would say... " buy nice or buy twice..."
This kit should fit as I believe the Mk2 Scirocco is a similar weight to a Mk1 Golf.... they do sell a Mk1 golf cabriolet version as well because the cabriolet weighs more..
Good kit with a 40mm drop and still just as comfortable as the standard set up, a few on here run this set up..

Nah I don't mind the rock hard ride I've had cheapo coillies on a mk4 golf, vento and jetta mk2 and it wasn't that bad. But I find the lower you go the harder they get. Plus I like the idea of it being adjustable.
these are the set I'm thinking of getting- https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2277151886

What ever you do keep hold of the original struts etc as they are getting hard to find and if you do sell the car or want to switch back you have the option to fit springs and shocks.
Don't forget to fit new top mounts Febi are the ones to get, most of the other ones I've tried over the 20 years of driving Mk1's don't seem to last as long.

I'll have a look on eBay for Febi top mounts and see how much they are.
Definitely going to keep the old shocks and springs as it would be a shame to throw them out plus who would want to buy shocks and springs that have done 186k+

The front struts have a shock which is inserted into it, it's the metal housing which is tricky to find and the washers and metal spacers on the front and rear are the bit's you need to keep hold of. (Mk1 golf use the same set up as Mk1 and Mk2 Scirocco)

New front shocks look like this.

Top mounts, it seems cheaper to buy a kit and not use the bump stop and plastic dust cover, may be sell them on?

Re: Hi everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself and my shedrocco
one thing to watch out for as well is your camber is going to be out if your messing with suspension so make sure you take measurements before you take it apart!!
this is a jig i made specifically for measuring camber with the weight on the suspension BEFORE taking it apart.
after its just a case of slapping it back together with the jig attached and adjust till its the same reading as before.
alternatively take it to a reputable garage that has facilities to do camber.
i took mine to vw the first time and they robbed me of £280 for the pleasure!!!!!!!!
