Rear brake drum advise

Hey guys,

Anyone have any tips on rebuilding the rear drums. What order is best for putting the springs back in?
I hate shoes with a passion lol

If it's your first time doing them, leave one assembled for reference.

Bottom Spring is the hardest so I like to put that on the shoes before putting the pins in, then the rest I assemble after.

It’s the first time doing the Rocco ones.
Would you suggest bottom spring, shoes In the hub, pins and then the rest?

Yeah, thats what I do, you can just put the shoes on and then the bottom spring but its a lot more hassle, especially if you don't have drum brake pliers

So to say I’m getting pea’d off with these brakes would be an under statement!

So it’s just not happening... I’ve got the handbrake cable attached, lower return spring, pin holders but then you can’t get the cross bar across the top...

Any advise would be amazing I’ve been trying to get these done for near on a month now with parts being wrong and well not it just not happening lol

Just need the bottom spring which will be hard to put on with the shoes already in place. and the auto adjust spring

For the lower spring, unclip 1 side shoe at the bottom, the side without the handbrake cable, fit spring to both shoes and get a big flat headed screw driver and then lever the bottom of the shoe onto the holder. Fit adjuster spring to the wedge.
Last thing to fit is the springs which hold the shoes onto the back plate.

All succeeded with that and then a new issue arises...

I’ve fitting the new bearings into the drum and now the drum doesn’t want to fit over the shoes... managed to get one side on with the aid of a mallet hoping it would free up but no it didn’t...
I’ve checked the old and new drums both 181mm..
and the handbrake and adjuster are both released...
Any ideas before I set fire to the thing?

You need the adjuster wedge to be as high as you can get it, then the drum will slip on easy. Then once you've got it on, rotate the drum so you can see the hole in the bottom of the wedge through a bolt hole. Then get someone to stand on the pedal while you pull the wedge down.

Pretty sure the wedge was all the way up... which left me doubting if the pads are correct...

I’ll go and hit them again tomorrow and if not have a bonfire lol

So I’ve tried what you said nate and still no joy. Dave on the Facebook group got back to be though and said he has the same problem.

The issue was the wheel cylinders from heritage that don’t compressor far enough due to an extra washer. He sent me a link for the ones he used that worked so I’ve brought a pair and I’ll give them a go.

Do you have 2 big cylinders underneath your master cylinder in the engine bay, rear brake pressure regulator?

If so you need the bigger rear wheel cylinders, 17mm ones not the 14mm ones in the link as you will have low rear braking.

Have you go the shoes in right place when fitting the drums? Sometimes you need to slide them up or down a little to get them in the right place so the drum fits over the top.
