Overheated... I think...

Hi guys, I need a little help if you would be so kind.

I was driving home from work today, stop start traffic. There was gradually a load of steam from under the bonnet. The fan had been kicking in fine all day, although with the traffic I couldn't hear it (might test and change the fuse). There was no warning light on inside the car and to be honest the temp seemed OK on the dial. Home now, after turning the engine on and off all the way (which is a sod with an immoboliser!!) I have had a look under the bonnet and cant see any hoses or leads that are untoward but there does seem to be liquid dripping from the air box/carb down onto the engine. Cant see if its fuel or something else. There was a healthy supply of fuel and it was retracting back to the tank when I turned the engine off.

I know its a long shot, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy, Just when you don't need it eh? Check all the hoses carefully when they are hot as any leaks sometimes don't show up till hot. Sounds like you have a leaky coolant hose possibly on the carb, (choke connections or manifold) from your description and if the temperature gauge was ok you have probably caught it in time and before any expensive damage was caused by loss of coolant. Sorry can't be any more help but I'd start by a bit of leak tracing.

Thanks very much Rob. Yeh, not good timing!! I'll go and have a gander now. I noticed the coolant level go down a bit since I topped it up, so I was hoping it was just a hose. I need to get the airbox off.

Agreed with Rob Andy, get a decent screwdriver and just make sure all the hose clips are tight. A small leak from around the choke unit can kick up loads of steam when it drips straight onto a hot exhaust manifold. Check the coolant level when the engine is cold for a true level.

What you said is pretty much what has happened. There is a small 6" piece of coolant hose running to the carb which has a tiny hole in it. As soon as I nudged it my finger got covered in foul tasting water and coolant. I just need to find a piece of hose to fit it... before Monday!

Can anybody suggest a place that will sell coolant hoses... I need a 6" length of hose. About 20mm is it? Runs to the carb off a few other hoses and fixtures. I have been at work all day today so I haven't had a chance to source one down. Do halfrauds stock such things? Cheers
