hey,
my roc wasn't starting and someone said its probably the timing when he looked at it, could this happen in just one day or does it take time for the timing to stop it from firing?
also how easy is it to re-set the timing?
timing?

Re: timing?
this wont be an over nite ocurrance, you need to ask why he/she says its the timing to try and find out what has actually gone wrong. check all the obvious things first before you fiddle with the timing.there might be something really obvious wrong.
I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

Re: timing?
rotate the engine by hand to TDC, no1 cylinder firing. (there should be a mark on the flywheel pulley, failing that "feel" for the piston reaching the top of it's travel with a pencil inserted thru the spark plug hole)
take the dizzy cap off. the rotor arm should be more or less lined up with a little knick in the rim of the distributor.
i'm assuming that whoever looked at it meant ignition timing, not engine timing.
if it is engine timing, line up the bottom pulley at TDC as before, take off the timing belt cover and check the notch in the cam sprocket lines up with the mark on the rear timing belt cover. if it is 180° out then turn the engine 1 revolution of the crank pulley and recheck. also check the tension of the belt while you're at it. you should just be able to twist the longest run of the belt thru 90° with light-ish finger pressure
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you say you have a spark, is it nice and strong blue or is it a weak looking, possibly yellowish spark? what is the condition of the plug leads, distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs? are the plugs gapped correctly? plugs should have a slight brownish tinge to them. if they are wet or sooted up then clean them
does the engine sound normal when turning over, or is it turning quicker than you might expect? open the coolant expansion tank, is there any trace of oil in there? check the dipstick and under the oil filler, is there any signs of mayonnaise?

Re: timing?
hey thanks for the reply, haven't checked the timing yet but will do soon,
the spark is nice and bright, the plugs were wet when i took them out a couple of times yesterday but then dry sometimes aswell, they have a bit of soot on them so will clean them. is it possible for the timing to go in just one day?

Re: timing?
hurrah!
many thanks for all the help but it turns out it was just my dodgy alarm/immobiliser stopping it from starting, whipped that out and its fine now.
thanks for the help though
