Presume the lock is only held in place with the tanged "U" shaped plastic clip?? IS it just a push fit in ??

yes but its probably going to fall back out at some time as there useless
you could stick it in with a bit of araldite.
i seem to recall putting a self tapping screw in mine then cutting the head off level with the back of the lock.
wouldn't really see it unless you look for it.

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!
