stronger wishbones

Post by BlackGTX »

gonna be replacing my wishbones as they are quite bad and it bringd to mind scrappys car which bent one

as they are pressed steel im thinging of getting sone 2mm plate or metal rod welded along the seem to make sure they hold

bear in mind that the engine will hopefully get close to the 200bhp mark and these were designed with 112 in mind

any better ideas?

There are pros and cons to this - the biggest con I can think of is that maybe wishbones are designed to collapse in the event of a hard impact. If you make them too stiff all the force will be transferred to the chassis. I'd rather deal with bent wishbones than a bent chassis.

I've seen a lot of builds where people copy the factory wishbones on mk2s/Corrados - these are seam welded but with gaps left in between.

Other options would be "reinforcing plates" - https://www.epytec.de/en/chassis-techno ... kung?c=478 - it wouldn't be too hard to make your own.

Yes same wishbones for Mk1 golf and Mk1 golf cabriolet as fitted to a mk2 and Mk1 Scirocco.
Mk2 golf wishbones are different.

nice of you to think of me :-) .... i have also been doing some research and in the end i just sat back and not bothered any futher as i agree with mr brown - would rather replace a bent wishbone than deal with a bent chassis. must admit, the wishbones that came off the scala were in piss poor condition and my driving isnt 'driving miss daisy style' the replacements from the storm i brought new are doing a good job.

totally agree buddy, glad you got it sorted as the photos of the wheels pulled back in the arches were pretty shocking.
still it would be nice to have the adjustability on the lower arms albeit at a cost

I believe this guy already works with a VW specialist - Jason Moyles - http://www.jmrclubsport.co.uk to produce an 020 "motorsport" style shifter. As Jason specialises in all things mk1 chassis I'm sure Satchell are familiar with our cars.

This is also a great idea for widetracking/camber/rose-jointed suspension
