make my car faster!
so the rebuild post respray is happening way too fast and i don't plan on moting it until march so figured i would play with the engine. plan is to take it out, tidy and respray the engine bay and declutter if i can. whilst the engine is out i thought i may as well clean it up, paint it and generally put it back together in the confidence it will last!
before anyone says it, i have no intention of plonking a 1.8T in as i would like to keep the properness of what i have.
Spec:
oginally it was a kjet 1.8 dx engine. i have changed it as below.
2 litre 2E bottom end (from a 120,000 mile passat if my memory serves)
dx dizzy with adaptor ring
aluminium blanking plate with 16v WUR
hydraulic head (but from a 1.8 engine, not the 2 litre so still has pressed metal cam cover)
268 newman road/rally cam
Kent vernier pulley
2litre throttle body, match ported into manifold
Manifold match ported to head
Pipercross panel filter in original airbox which has been drilled with cold air feed
stainless 4-1 manifold
longlife stainless exhaust
mocal oil cooler
sachs clutch with 9E flywheel
although not performance relevant - samco hoses
Now what i was thinking is the next step is big valve port and polished head. I plan to use this guy as he's local and knows his stuff (i will also quiz him nearer the time):
www.jmrclubsport.co.uk
then get the flywheel a bit lightened and balanced but not too much.
then possibly look at megasquirt to replace the kjet as apparently the kjet starts to choke it up a bit at higher bhp's
any thoughts or advice on how to make my little beast a bit quicker?
thanks in advance,
Steve

Re: make my car faster!
Jason is a top bloke and definitely does know his stuff - but I'm sure he farms out the engine work to someone else. If you found who that is you might save yourself a few bob.
Megasquirt would definitely see you release a few horses but not as many as you might expect - and you're looking at £several hundred at least for the conversion. Mike H has done it on one of his Sciroccos.
If you're going to get headwork done then it might be better/more economical to go for a tastier cam.

Re: make my car faster!
just treat it to a decent rolling road session at a pro tuners.
they will be able to see what its currently making then tweak it to get a few more horses.
they will be able to make the most of your vernier pulley and set up the mechanical and ignition timing bang on.

Stick a 20vt in it.
Ben
Couldn't resist, but in my defence I never said 1.8T, lol

Re: make my car faster!
I think you are going down the right route but I guess you will then reach the limits of tuning that engine, after that engine swop is the way forward.
Other option go out and buy a silly track car like a Airal atom to satisfy your need for speed

you've got everything in place for a stonking engine, definitely some good head work, big inlet valves etc. and a better cam will really wake it up

Re: make my car faster!
Exactly how much BHP are you looking at? From memory, K-Jet can cope with ~200BHP with the correct set-up, might not be the smoothest at idle with the changes done to the engine but it will cope with the power.then possibly look at megasquirt to replace the kjet as apparently the kjet starts to choke it up a bit at higher bhp's
Are you planning to do something to be able to transfer that power to the wheels without it just spinning in place?

Re: make my car faster!
Fair point. It's currently about 150bhp and torquey. The last time I drove it, it seemed to put the power down fine. If I could get it to maybe 175bhp that would be cool. The thing is my daily is a bmw 535d, 3 litre twin turbo that does 0-60 in 6.5 secs so it needs to have some poke to give that a run for its money. Having said that I drove it up the road on Sunday and it wheelspun like mad and scared the shit out of me! So maybe I used to be used to it and am now used to computer! I was grinning from ear to ear though!

Re: make my car faster!
Buy a slower daily drive and the Scirocco will feel faster
BMW 535D is a quick car that is why the police use them.

Re: make my car faster!
If you read through the post with spec sheet, viewtopic.php?f=19&t=18558&start=15, 2.0l 152bhp is (or was) doing 0-60 in 7.0 secs so you should be able to get close to the BMW already.steve bain wrote:Fair point. good spot! i kinda think that whilst the engine is out and in bits i may as well get some headwork done, but i see your point about getting the power down. seems to be a big issue for the 1.8t guys.

Re: make my car faster!
It can be, especially in the wet. The big difference is the way the turbo delivers the power. Your n/a engine will have much smoother power delivery than the big kick you get when the turbo spools up, even if you get yours closer to 200bhp it will still be much more linear (and easier to get on the ground) than the same power from a turbo engine.steve bain wrote:seems to be a big issue for the 1.8t guys.

Re: make my car faster!
A set of good quality tyres also is a must in getting the power down.
I had some cheapo tyres, Debica Presto with about 4mm tread left on a cheap set of wheels I bought for the winter I could spin the wheels in a standard Mk1 Golf Gti on wet greasy roads in 3rd!

Re: make my car faster!
I have a similar spec engine (not yet fitted) to what you have and a similar daily driver. I'm expecting the Scirocco to be nippy but accept it'll never be a match for the torquey turbo diesel. It should be a different driving experience though and feel a lot faster than it is, due to the 'seat of your pants' experience you get with an older car - no ABS, power steering, less refined ride etc.
Unless you want to throw a lot of money at your DX engine for very little gain, I would just get it set up properly on a rolling road and hopefully that will get the most out of what you do have. I'd be interested to see what figures your current set-up is giving though.

Re: make my car faster!
The mk 2 DX Engine which is 8v injection runs in at 1'000,00 miles which means the engine gets quicker sally has done nearly 2'000.00 nearly has had half engine rebuild done last summer 2016.Stainless steel exhaust, power roar pipe, pipercross box filter so the bottom of the original airbox has been taken out this will not give it much more B.H.P when the 16v 2.0 throttle body and W.U.R has been fitted will give her more B.H.P
G Beats.Been into MK 2 V.W Sciroccos since 98.Now on my fourth MK 2 Scirocco. R.I.P two MK 2 Scala DX Engine's.Sold GT 2. No longer have a mk 2 v.w Scirocco as it was stolen back in February 2020 .Or another one know have a 1980s BMW.
