gearbox removal

Post by james butler »

is it just me or is the gearbox a nuisance to remove as the drivers side flange hits the back of the block!!
is there an easier way to remove the box or a particular method other than trying to yank it out?
ive allready got it out now but its never really been and easy task so am i missing something?
one more thing a 5 inch length of all thread in the top gearbox bolt hole makes lining up the gearbox for assembly and removal makes life a lot easier!!

Drive shafts are a right nightmare, I found you can't fit them back into the flanges when all in place and you have to loosen the hub to get them back and that upset the camber angle.
It's not an easy job.
Good idea about the threaded bar.

thought i would make a transmission jack this week seeing as some of my parts havent turned up yet.
should make getting the gearbox back in a doddle...........hopefully
Image
started off with extending an old 2 ton RAC jack to give me the lift i needed

Image
then set about extending the wheelbase and length so it wouldnt topple over as easy.

Image

just gotta make the extra large saddle now to take the gearbox, i have some alloy chequer plate kicking around somewhere.

Liking the jack,
I cheated a little fitting my gearbox as I had no injection system, exhaust or radiator fitted as I was fitting in the engine so I dropped the engine in from above then slide the gearbox underneath the car and then stood in the engine and could lift it up by hand and slot it in and bolt it up. :-)

Good job.

Little tip with the pictures, if you remove the whole "URL" bit from the image link, i.e. just leave the bit, it stops a photobucket page opening up when you click on a pic. I've changed the first one above so you can see the difference.
