Electric window no longer working.
Today my drivers side electric window decided to pack up. Considering the cars done 170 thousand miles it's no surprise. Anyway the window went down really slowly but went back up at it's normal speed and then it wouldn't go down at all. On inspection one of the cables going down from the motor is kinked and falling apart. And to make matter worse after fating around trying to fix the problem the window has now stopped working completely. So what are my options. Can i get i get a new motor? or am i going to have to convert to manual winders. Thanks in advance, John.

I believe new window regulators which include the motors are available from VW Classic Parts, but are very expensive. You might want to try breakers first.

Re: Electric window no longer working.
Thanks i will check them out. The only one i've found so far is brand new and going for £300 which is almost half the value of the car.
Re: Electric window no longer working.
Yes, exactly. The part numbers are 533837401D and 533837402D and VW Heritage can get Classic parts, but they are around £300 each.
VW Heritage also can get the manual regulators (533837401B and 533837402B) from Classic, and they are £82 each. Good used manual ones are probably easy to find too. If you switch to manual windows, you might want to pick up a used set of matching door cards too.
It also appears you may be able to get a reman power window motor alone from Rockauto for about £100, but you'd still need to repair the regulator, and I'm not sure if these are easily available in the UK. Yes, I'd probably try breakers first... good luck!

Have you ran 12v directly to the regulator first to rule anything else out?

Re: Electric window no longer working.
Sorry for replying so late. Problem was the cable was jamming . lIke i said it would go up with no trouble but refused to go down. you could hear and feel it trying but it just wouldn't budge. Anyway not having time to mess around as i drive the car everyday i bought a new unused motor and cables off ebay for £300 which i wasn't very happy about. Looking forward now to fitting it, as the cable has jammed and i can't access the screws that attach the mechanism to the glass. Thanks agin, John.

Re: Electric window no longer working.
Hi All,
I've recently bought a 1992 GT II with electric windows- neither of which are working!
I've had a play with them today and come to the following conclusion:
Drivers side has had a new regulator and motor at some point, a 533837401D and just needed a bit of grease to get it going again - however - it will only go down, not up, although I switched the wires round on the motor and it will go up (using the down button), but it seems the "up" button on the switch isn't working.
Passengers side has a completely different regulator - like this: https://goo.gl/images/3vHxMH - which is pants compared to the other one, the cog is loose and doesn't grip the cable, there was a phenomenal amount of muck in it preventing it from moving- I got it going with some WD40 but its beyond repair!
Both motors are working however !
A couple of questions on this if anyone could help :)
The drivers door switch - is it safe to say its the switch that's faulty here or is it possibly a relay somewhere - are there separate ones for drivers/passengers window?
Could it be the motor? although it will go both ways by swapping polarity manually.
does anyone know where to get the switches from? I can't find them anywhere, they seem to be a lower profile than those in mk2 golfs.
Passenger regulator - is my only option the very expensive ones from VWH?
Thanks
