prospective owner,couple of probs

Post by panzer »

Hi All,

I'm likely to be taking on a 91 GT2 in the next week. It has one issue though, either a jammed ignition barrel or the ignition key has been lost as the 2 keys with the car won't turn in the barrel. I have found a couple of golf/jetta pages showing a technique of drilling a small hole through the barrel casing allowing you to depress the retaining clip so I can replace the barrel has anyone done this on a scirocco? I an appreciate it's possibly a worrying first post but the car is a rescue job following a bereavement. I will be giving a good lube and hopefully this will shift the key to get it running but need to prepare for more drastic measures.

Have you tried moving the steering wheel from side to side whilst trying to turn the key?

If you can borrow for find a Haynes manual it has the measurements of where to drill to remove to lock.
But 1st try the suggestion above as that will save a lot of time and effort.

Cheers guys, tried rocking it but I was only there to give her an idea what it may be worth and wasn't intending to buy it but since have ended up doing so :-D I didn't want to upset the late owners wife by getting neanderthal with it but am going round tomorrow to pick it up so one way or another it's going to have to be moving. I'll report back over the weekend and maybe throw a pic or two up

I was just about to drill the barrel and she found the bloody keys :-D . It started first time after 5 months standing, was idling at 2k initially but settled down after a run, drives really well

Not looking it's best yet but the interior has been stripped out cleaned and replaced, bodywork needs a full on mop and polish which will happen next week. There's a very nice solid example lurking under the oxidisation. I wondered if it was known as the owner was quite the VW nut in Liverpool

Looks a tidy car, I see you have the classic VW red paint fade.

Nice. Looks good on those rims too. Reminds me of the first Scirocco I ever saw and thought 'I want one' :)
