Boot struts

Any good recommendations for places to buy? Heritage want £40 and i'd rather have the boot land on my head a few more times for that price.

Plenty of people have been happy with http://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts.

They seem to have cocked up my order - I don't think they could handle the extra complication of an order for a Golf and a Scirocco at the same time.

You also have to be careful which way round they've attached the connectors, as invariably they are the wrong way round (easily fixed as they unscrew).

They're sold individually (you need to order 2). Make sure you get the ones for later cars as the pressure is higher for the larger rear spoiler.

Go scrapyard hunting. Suggestion - almera ones have the same fittings on the end. Will go measure in a minute, as conveniently I have a scrap almera sat on the drive. I thought about this the other day as I (annoyingly) sold them

Almera ones are 21" long and rocco ones are 20.5" long. Close enuf I reckon. The bad news is that the Almera has a ball both ends and the rocco has a ball one and and pin &eye the other. Half inch probably won't make a difference to operation I wouldn't have thought. Yous gonna have to get trawling the scrappy

You also need to know the pressure in the struts - SGS say a mk2 Scirocco with the large spoiler should have 470N force, whereas the mk2 Golf only needs 270N. As I found out, if you fit them to the wrong car, the Golf boot is very difficult to close and the Scirocco may as well have knackered old struts.

Or get a piece of plastic overflow pipe the same length as the exposed piston. Slide it over the top and you can wedge the boot up with it

Just got some today. Can't compress them at all. Not even 1mm. I'm sure it'll be easier once fitted. But thought they would budge a bit

470Nm is equal to 47kg of pressure , try pushing that in by hand.

Put one end to the floor and push at the other end.

Yeah thats what I did. I'm about 70kg, didn't slightly move. Wondered if they had to be unscrewed or something.

The lid makes quit a nice lever you will be surprised.
