i'd guess the easy way would be to drop a 6 speed box from a newer golf in. might was well chuck in the engine while you're on it. 20VT, PD150... :ok:

I remember reading about changing a 5 speed to a 6 speed about 10-15 years ago in one of the VW mags.
Anyway, try a company called Autotech Sport Tuning, they do 6 speed conversions by a company called Quaife, mind you it isn't gonna be cheap!

Hope this helps.

Defo just get a 6speed box for a 1.8T... or GTTDI.
I imagine you can find ideal Ratio's if you do abit of reasearch too. 6 speed Quaife gearsets are in the region of £3k & fitting i do beleive...

cheers for the help ive had a chat with Quaife before about a different project i was thinking of doing last year i would quite like to keep the 1.6 engine as its origonal the only reason i was thinking of a 6speed conversion is the gearbox needs abit of a re-con and i thought it might be a useful upgrade at the same time but for that price 5 speed is enough for me

6 speed box is physically a bit big to get in without chassis leg mods too .. trust me, I've reasearched all the options on this!

Apparently I hadn't researched all the options on this after all!!!!!

If you go for an aftermarket gear kit like the Gemini one (there is a group buy currently on ClubGti ...not bad at £1300 for the gear kit) it can be made to go in a Mk1 unmodified!

The later factory 6 speeds do still need chassis leg mods though so I was mostly right .... sorry if I mislead anybody
