Battery light flickering on

Post by scirocco-monkey »

OK, Got a new battery fitted and alternator. Car starts first time everytime. Battery shows 12.2V when the car is off and 14.4V when running so I figure the alternator is ok but I have noticed when I start the car the battery light flickers on, It goes off if I increase the revs then returns when I take my foot off the pedal. Never noticed this before. Any ideas?

Cheers...Rich :-D

Something to do with the alternator belt?

^ this, or a bad connection on the thin blue wire somewhere.

Ben.

It had a brand new belt fitted about 2 months ago and is not slipping or anything, Idles around 1000. I should mention the car is running like a pig at the moment and I have a mobile tuning guy coming over to set the carb and timing etc. Whats this blue wire then?

Oh and talking of wires I noticed a green wire thats connected to the side of the distributor had come off, It's back on now but what is this for? I figure it's an earth.

Thanks all...Rich

The blue wire is what tells the alternator to switch on and start charging the battery, it runs along the same loom as the bigger connector to the alternator, there may be connection near the battery but not sure what year car you have as they did change connections.
Earth wires are usually brown, do you have a picture of the green wire?

Hi just noticed on 91 GT2 the green wire tie wrapped up, looks like no spade connector on the dizzy body either. Is this right ??

That wire is for oil temperature. I don't think any models used it from factory? Not really sure why they included it in the loom, but I used mine for a VDO gauge.

GTI (pre-MFA) had an oil temp gauge next to the ashtray.

That lug you have fitted the green wire to is the earth connection for the radio suppression shield fitted to the distributor of older models I believe.

sorry to high jack the thread but
ed does this mean i could wire a oil pressure gauge in using existing loom parts?
does this wiring go all the way through to the dash on all models?

It goes to the fuse box.
