Temperature sender

Post by unknownmale »

On my mates car the temp gauge is always reading 0 (far left) It's obviously wrong...

Does anyone know what the operating voltages are for the gauge so I can test this first by running a fake signal to it before I condemn the sender unit?

Equally I could test the sender unit by checking for a varying voltage on the signal wire as the engine warms up, but think the first test will be easier.

I'm assuming its grounded to the block and the two wires are just a power and a signal?

Cheers

The simple test I do is take the connecter off the sender and hold it against the engine block and the gauge should go to max (with the ignition on)

There actually seems to be two units on this car. Mine only has one. Different coloured wires too

Oh... There's only one on my car as well, on the front engine water flange with a spade connector fitted to it.
Like this.

My Golfs in the garage but just checked my MK1 scirocco but that has the sensor on the side of the head and that has a blue wire with a couple of yellow strips?

Cheers, will have a play tomorrow. A lot of after market wiring on this car. Although hooking up the fog light switch to the coil wire via a relay is a good idea, even if it did take me an hour to figure out why the car wasn't starting.

Just found a picture from the golf before I removed the engine and it's a yellow wire with possibly a red stripe?
I'll check later as that's what I'm wiring back up tonight along with the WUR, oil pressure, oil temp, cold start valve.
Perhaps the other sensor on your car is for the auto choke if it's a carb car?

Strange, Just checked mine and I have the temp sender on the right of the block with an Yellow wire. His doesn't have a sender here on the hose. Instead there are two 2 pin connectors on the front of the block where the top hose joins. Mines an 1987 1.8carb scala, his is a 1990 1.8carb gt2.

Maybe it's one of the electrical updates in the haynes

My 1988 DX engine golf has the sensor on the front of the head where the top hose joins and it's a yellow wire with a red strip.

Does the car have something like this fitted to the front of the head?
