Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
Hope someone can help.
Checked the indicator stalk as I had lost the self cancelling function, the little white tang had broke. Fine ordered new stalk.
Just come to fit it, checked self cancelling function first on new unit all good. Undid the 3 screws holding the old unit in place and disconnected the wiring, all going good. Fit new stalk have all functions except high beam (flash) ?? What have I done wrong???
Is it linked somehow to the wiper stalk ?? All wiper functions are ok ??
What I thought was a simple job has become a complete mare.

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
there's a hook on the stalk that catches the dim full button and it's easy to miss check that.

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
Hook was attached, still no joy. Is high beam linked to a relay ?? All fuses seem ok.
All wiper stalk functions are ok.
For reference the stalk is new

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
sounds like one of of the connections to the stalks are loose or not pushed home correctly.
just go over the connections one more time, i know there tight to get in and out.

Cheers James
What I cannot understand is that all functions except high beam (flash) work ?? Even when switching the headlamp switch on a going side light, dipped and pulling the indicator stalk back the main beam (high beam) works ??
That's why I thought I was linked electrically through a relay / fuse ??
Really stumped now.

Do you know that the replacement was working properly before you fitted it? Might be worth trying another.

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
theres no relay i know about is there that flips between high and low beam?
thats why usually if it doesnt work you have a faulty stalk or a fuse has gone/ wiring is faulty.

here are the fusebox and relay locations

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
did you try stripping it out and reconnecting everything?

James
Its gets worse, changed back to original stalks were only the self cancelling indicators were the issue and guess what, no high beam. Will check fuse 9+10, but think they are ok. only thing after that will be the wiring.
Would you think it could be the wiring to the small that actually connects to the high beam latch on the wiper stalk ?? or the wiring to the indicator stalk??
How would you recommend checking the wiring. Electrics not my strong point, now getting into area which is my weak point.

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
if the main beam was working before then you can be pretty sure its the plug and wiring going to the indicator stalk either not plugged in correctly or is loose.
if its not that then you will need to test at different points where the power comes from and goes to your main beams. then you will see whats not working.
daft question but have you checked the bulbs arent blown?
on a side note i did have my head light switch do funky things to the lights before it finally burnt out, just something to look out for!

Re: Changed indictaor stalk and lost high beam
After dis connecting everything again, think I may have worked out something.
I removed the 4 pin plug from the back of the wiper arm, the one that links to the dim/full button, presume this will be earth, permanent live and switched live, plus something else (as it has 4 pins).
The reason for this rationale as I have not put a multi meter to it is that if the high beam works when the lights are switched I presume the feed for the high beam is a switched live ?? And as the high beam is not working without the lights switched on, would this mean that it is not seeing a permanent live feed to it ??
Does this sound ok or am I clutching at straws. 5 min job now into its 3rd day.
Anyone know a good auto electrician near Bolton..
