hi peeps,
im struggling to find info on the luminition ignition kit as regards to whether or not to keep the ballast resister wired to my coil pack on a datsun 260z when using the luminition kit.
i have tried z car owners club forums but with very little success as most people either pay someone else to do the work or have had it allready fitted in the car when they got it. some even have a lumition flamethrower coil instead of the origenal but i dont want to have to change the coil if i dont have to so i can keep it as origenal as possible.
any info would be greatly appreciated

What is the luminition kit? Is it electronic ignition instead of the original points and condenser?

Yes mate, I've inadvertently answered my own question, I found a company that fits them and managed to ask them.
Apparently you can use your old coil with the ballast resister.
All this kit does is remove the points and condenser part.
Using a led light and a light reciever it sends a signal to a small ignition amp the same way vw hall sender works.
And uses a rotor with a number of arms on to break the beam of light. 4 cylinder=4 arms on the rotor, 6 cylinder= 6 arms on the rotor to break the light.
Hopefully I will get time to actually fit it next week and get it working.

By the way the kits are universal you just have to buy the right fitting kit to bolt inside the dizzy.

From the dim & distant past I think I remember a bit about this. The use of ballast resistor is all related to the volatge drop when the starter is operating (due to the huge load on the battery). When the starter is operating the coil is direct on the 12V supply (but it's not 12V because of the starter load). When the starter is disengaged (engine has started) the action of switching off the starter switches the ballast resistor back into the coil feed. Nett effect is that the coil always operates at a lower voltage.
So I don't think it affects your lumenition installation - but I may be wrong!

I fitted an Accuspark kit to my car, I used the orgininal coil and ballast resister the hardest thing I found was finding power from the fusebox which did not disengage when cranking the engine on the key.

im having the same issue mark1gls.
some forums say you can use the 12v feed that goes to the ballest resister which feeds the coil too, but i think a proper switched ignition feed would be better.
