really impressed! its a shame as mines got scratches from over the years so will never be as tidy. seriously tempted to respray it now! do you like cleaning by chance?!

Cheers mate . There are plenty of scratches, especially on the rear arches, doesn't show up in the pics. Personally I'm not worried about them, I like the fact that she can be used without worrying about scratching fresh paint.

Not really, I seem to spend more time on parts no one sees than on the top. Car hasn't been cleaned on the outside since I bought it.

Been messing with a couple of little jobs. The arch trims are pretty battered...



I've ordered some new ones from VW Classic parts, should be here in a few weeks, only £6 each.

The trims and the grommets that they attach through were stuck on with something nasty.

The grommets don't appear to be available anymore so I left them to soak in de-greaser for a few days...

The replacement arches only have two holes for the trims to mount to (the trims have three 'legs') so I'll only need four of the grommets. I'll trim the bottom leg off the new trims and use doube sided trim tape to hold the bottom on.

Trying to decide whether to clean up the original bumper bolts and washers or to try and get some stainless equivelants.

One of the clips for the rear panel ripped out when I took the panel out...



Trying some contact adhesive to see if that will hold it..



I only did that today so no idea how well it will hold yet.

And lastly, I noticed that the breather pipes from the tank up to the filler neck are hanging down. The original mount that the non return valve clips onto had rusted completey off, so I've had a hunt in the garage and found an exhaust mount (off an air cooled beetle exhaust)...



I'm going to drill a hole and mount it through the top of the arch so hopefully that should keep it all secure.

Covered the repaired join in superglue, hopefully will help keep it in place

I've only ordered one pair to start with, wanted to check the fit.

They go in pretty well, original covers fit and the underneath cover





The top cover touches on the tweeter so to make sure I get no rattles I'm going to need some spacers to keep it from touching.

Tried one in the front as well, they go in fine but again they catch slightly on the covers. The covers go on but don't click into place, this time its the outer edge of the speaker catching so I may need to trim a little off the inside of the cover.

With the rear speakers why not attach them underneath the shelf then you won't need to use any spacers.

with your fuel tank tubes, do you not have the plastic cover which protects it all and would also hold it up in place?

speakers look good. I think i used to have some alpine ones. form memory i think the rear speaker fit underneath, so you fit the grill flush with the carpet, speaker from below, then plastic, then screws. i may be wrong though, but it may solve your problem!

i ended up cutting my doors up and located some 5inch componants behind the original grill in the end. made a real difference from memory and still looked standard

cheers guys, didn't even think of that, must be having a 'blonde' day.

The mount for the plastic hose cover had rusted off completely, so I trimmed the cover so that it covers the hole that the pipes exit through and thought that would be enough. To be honest it probably would be but I'd rather know that they are held up there securely.
