I have quite a bit of play in the handbrake mounting brackets. My handbrake has approx 20mm of sideways movement at the handle and the wear is in the pivot brackets welded to the floor; drivers side is worse than passengers. Has anyone tried to fit bushes or replaced these two mounting brackets. Are replacements available?
Handbrake and pivot pin are good.
Any ideas?

Re: Handbrake pivot mounts
Cheers Nate; but if I wrap the pin with tape it will not go through the handbrake. Also, one of the bracket holes is no longer round, more elliptical; hence the lateral movement, I was hoping replacement brackets were available, if not then I guess one answer is to ream out the hole and fit some form of thin bush.
Any other Ideas, anyone breaking a shell with a useable righthand bracket?

Aha - so I either come up with a fix or replace the whole assy using 171711281K from VW Heritage at a mere £60 - ouch. But any ideas how it attaches, screw/bolt or weld?

a quick look at the mk1 which still doesn't have carpets in, i reckon the whole assembly goes in from underneath. you'll probably find a line of spot welds that will need drilling out

Re: Handbrake pivot mounts
Drilling out was my first consideration but we are looking at 13/14 mm diameter. Not as easy as it sounds since these size drills generally do not have a waisted shank and hence do not fit the standard domestic chuck. Holding it steady to ensure the holes in the brackets remains concentric, Bolt head and nut clearance under the plastic cover, and I would need to drill out the handbrake itself, all little teasers.
I was hoping someone had come across this one before; still, first time for everything. Nothing ventured and all that.....
