Have a tiny (pea-sized) rust hole on the n/s front roof pillar on my Mk2, caused when the windscreen was replaced some years ago and the installer damaged the paint. It's been like that for years, isn't getting any bigger and has never been raised as an issue on the MOT. I cover it with duct tape to stop water leaking into the passenger footwell.
Thing is, I'm taking it for MOT soon, to a new place as the old one has changed hands after many years, and I'm wondering how strict they might be. The MOT manual only talks about 'excessive corrosion' and 'severely reducing strength or continuity'.
To my mind, it can't be weakening the pillar very much at all but I'm no expert...

Re: Roof pillar corrosion
It is more than likely rusting more on the inside, so would be best to get sorted.
I think it should probably be a fail, as the pillars are a structural component. Not actually come across it before though.
You could always have a quick work with your new tester in advance and ask

Re: Roof pillar corrosion
ive had this on my mums primera. the mot tester said as long as their is no hole then it will not fail. its gotta be said if it did fail i dought the garage would be able to fix it, therefore they`re not going to fail it for no reason.
if it was dangerous i think an mot testers opinion would count

Re: Roof pillar corrosion
Fortunately it passed, though it is something I want to remedy longer term, it's the taking out of the screen and getting it put back in that's the big problem, ie synchronising those two events with the mending in-between, when I can't be sure how long it will take to fix or even when I'll be able to do it.

Re: Roof pillar corrosion
I dremeled out the rust on the primera and filled with fibreglass. The primera has a strength beam inside the a pillar so the bit I was filling was actually only a skin.
Don't know if same applies to a rocko?

Re: Roof pillar corrosion
it shouldn't have passed. any structural component that has corosion that has affected the strength (and a hole will) is a fail. it probably was either not checked or he didn't fancy doing the repair! grp repair would not be ideal, it really should be cut out and welded properly. but so long as all the rust is removed and suitable rust protection applied to stop it returning, if you fill it and paint so it's invisible, they will never know. that said, should you be unlucky enough to put the car on its roof, it would be nice to know the pillar isn't going to kink at the weak spot
