Coolant/Water Leak

Post by LeonDixon »

Found yet another fault with my MK2 1.8 GT2.. It kept cutting out when i was driving so i've replaced the fuel filter. On replacing the fuel filter i took it out for a test drive. During the test drive my alternator belt snapped and it started pissing water out of the coolant filler cap?? Anyone shed any light on this or had any problems similar?? Thanks.

The alternator belt also drives the water pump, so I hope you didn't drive far as you would have cooked your engine?

Only drove it about half a mile - a mile max home after the belt had snapped. Luckily I was a mile away really.

Hopefully it will be okay! Does the alternator turn okay and also the water pump, I'm asking as in 30 years of owning VW's I have never had a belt snap on me?

As Ian said, check everything is spinning nice and freely, also check for any rough bits on the pulleys and clean up with emery cloth if required. Chuck a new belt on and away ya go

Not teaching you to suck egg, but ensure your coolant is at the maximum level and run the car up to normal operating temperature and ensure you have no leaks or it isn't smoking!

Turns out the belt I received was too small, could only fit around the Alternator belt and Water pump?? Any ideas on what one to order?

950x10 is what you need as long as you don't have air con or power steering which most Scirocco don't

Slightly cheaper at Euro car parts

I think you know the organization I work for Nate!

I say try the dealers because at least the items will fit and their prices are sometimes cheaper!

Finally after sorting the cutting out issue and the snapped belt.. it runs! But now it's got a slight issue with smoking on idle. I'll leave it in my garage on idle and it starts smoking out from under the carb which I can only imagine is the manifold?? Problem after problem with this thing.

Smoke from under the carb could be oil burning off, they do leak oil from the rocker cover if you have a cork gasket that is to lose or to tight so have a look at the back of the rocker cover for any leaks.
Water is also passed through the inlet manifold so check the hoses for leaks and the jubilee clips are all tight as when you got the car very hot from running it with a snapped belt it could of caused these problems.
