Full beam cuts power to my clocks

Post by treefingers »

anyone good with electrics? do i have a grounding issue on my rebuild?

the power to my clocks (rev counter, mfa etc) cuts out when i pull on full beam. it's only full beam that cuts the power, everything else keeps the power on. the clock time resets and the rev counter drops to zero.

I've recorded a video of what happens...

I've been told it could be a grounding issue or the load reduction relay?

Did it occur before the engine change etc? Are you using the original stalks?
It sounds as if there is a short, any bare cables. How clean are the earthing points?

My advice would be to check the basics first and also make sure your engine is earthed from the rocker cover to the coil (this earth strap missing causes all sorts of weird issues!).

The 20v won't have an earth from the head to the coil, it doesn't use a coil. The coil packs earth to the head which earth's through the gearbox earth strap.
Mine worked perfectly ok with just that one.
Try taking the main beam switch apart and giving it a good clean.
Also check the earth points next to the fuse box in the car.
Did you cut any wires to the dash for your rev counter and temp gauge, if so make sure these are well insulated just in case.
Failing that I'd be checking the wiring for the headlights from the fuse box via the switch and into the engine bay just to make sure there are no breaks in the wiring that are earthing somewhere.

Ben.

On my Mk1 Golf with the MFA computer dash there is a earth which runs from the back of the clocks to the fuse box then off into the the engine bay and is connected to the side of the head, mine broke near the head and was just hanging on with a couple of threads and I got alsorts of problems when I used the lights, rev counter would read 1/2 what the revs was doing, display would cut out etc... So might be worth to check the earth to the instruments is there and heathly.
