Re: The Rocco Grotto
Paint.
Was quite happy with the finish from the gun, but there is always room for improvement so flatted and polished the panels.
Parallel to the bodywork, the engine was fully rebuilt. Bottom end received new bearings, oil pump and cooler, water pump, sump, and all gaskets and seals etc.
The head was cleaned, skimmed, the valves reground etc etc.
The gearbox was shipped off for refurbishment.

Re: The Rocco Grotto
The amount of new parts that have been required for this car is massive, however some of the original items were perfectly serviceable once they had been appropriately refurbished. Some of those parts media blasted:
And refurbished.
As a typical example of the new parts, here is the new tank painted and fitted with new lift pump and pipes ready to go on.
And the beam with refurbished backplates, stub axle and ARB and all new bushes and brakes.
Brand new headliner
Engine and box reunited with new clutch, coolant pipes, vac pipes, senders etc (yes those bits of surface rust were dealt with later!)
The electrics were installed prior to the engine. A new fusebox and all relays were needed to make the car functional. Big thanks to electric whizz GTMatt for your help with the sparky bits buddy.
And in with fluids and kjet system. It runs!
This pic shows bodykit is fitted and interior going in.
And the sunroof, vinyls and glass fitted. The windscreen is brand new (thanks for the tip-off, Nate) and almost all of the seals are also brand new from VW.
I would like a set of the correct black stripe rear lamps for this car but an excellent or new set is proving elusive so far, so a very very good set of standard lamps have been fitted for now rather than a tatty set of stripe lamps.
Managed to save the original carpets (!) and the seats, very pleased about that as I did think that the upholstery was a gonner, but its amazing what can be revived. Kim and Aggie saved my bacon. Still require a bit more work, but getting there.
And the door furniture
MOT not far off, the list of jobs is getting smaller.

Re: The Rocco Grotto
The 'Chap from Scotland' that Ant's restoring the GTX for here. Saw the car in the metal for the first time at the weekend, and conspired with the guys at RR to spring a surprise on my good lady. Risky business, but pleased to report all went well and she's highly delighted with the car and can't wait to have a drive. We had a couple of Sciroccos from new 'back in the day ('84 GL and '86 GTX) hence the nostalgia trip.
Up until the weekend, all business with Ant has been conducted by e-mail (including acquiring the car!) and I can't thank him and the Rust Republic team enough for their commitment, support and integrity. Honesty, fairness and attention to detail are cornerstones of their growing business, and they deserve to succeed.
Car should be coming to its new home in the north very soon (unless Alex Salmond manages to impose an import duty!!), and we're really looking forward to our first trip in her and maybe attending a few Register events?
Thanks again to Antony, Andy and any other RR contributors and of course to Emma for all her patience during her hubbie's long hours in the garage and for driving last Saturday when we retired to a Nottingham hostelry to sample some of the area's other craft skills!
Can't recommend these guys highly enough to anyone else considering a resto project

That looks sa-weeeeet. Love the BBS split rims. Is the Mk4 Golf across the road part of your fleet too?
Currently without a car (long story)
