Well from what I gather it's the thickness of the disc and mine are 12mm, But one caliper for sale says 12mm and the other says 12mm, 20mm :?

You haven't said what model of Scirocco you have. The Injection cars and later carbed cars were fitted with 239mm vented discs which were 20mm thick, the other models made do with solid 239mm discs and were 12mm. Have you got the correct and disc set up?

It's a standard 1.6GT with 12mm discs. I figure that the 12mm/20mm calipers just means it will take 20mm discs as well as 12mm. I just wanted to check before ordering them. I'll just get the 12mm calipers then.

Did you buy the correct pads for the 1.6 with 12mm discs?

The brake calipers, VWII are fitted to loads and loads VAG cars even upto a I think 2000ish Seat ibiza so lots about in scrap yards etc, fitted to Mk1 tintop and cabriolet, Mk2 and Mk3 and some Mk4 Golfs so you could search a local scrap yard?

Euro car parts have 50% off online orders. You will need to take your old ones in and may be best to replace both if you are keeping the car and I would go for the ones that fit 12mm - 20mm discs so at a later date when your discs and pads are shot you can upgrade them to ventend disc and the thinner pads needed for the disc.

Harder to get the bits to them but sister company to euro so call and ask if you can return them to a euro car parts branch?
£15 off if spending over £100.....

Well it's Europarts and Carpartsforless I normally get my parts from. I was thinking of stripping down the caliper and rebuilding it, I have no idea how to do this though. Unless anyone has a working right hand side caliper they wish to sell?

Brake components are best replaced or rebuilt in axle pairs ie both left and right, otherwise you can end up with uneven braking due to differences in efficiency/performance.

Rebuilding isn't hard, Google it, can't remember any specific links off the top of my head, will have a look at the weekend if I can find the time.

Oh well, A mate had a look at my calipers and confirmed that the pistons are not retracting all the way back so it's time to order a brand new set. If that dont stop the squeaking then im setting fire to it :-D

Right then, Fitted new calipers and hoses, Just took it for an MOT and it passed :-D But...It's still got the squeak, Im puzzled now because so far I have replaced the calipers, Wheel bearing, CV joint, Hoses, Flushed with new brake fluid, Pads are newish and the discs are in very good condition. The squealing starts after a mile or so and goes when the brake pedal is slightly pressed so im guessing it's brake related. The old calipers were knackered and with the new ones the wheels are not getting red hot anymore. Any ideas anyone?

I haven't re-read this whole thread but from memory it sounds like you're focusing on the front - have you checked out the rear? Could it be something is loose back there and applying the breaks steadies the something?

I checked for mice but none there. Im 99% sure it's coming from the front but the back end is going to be checked this week. Talking to a mate last night and he asked if I have used copper grease on the back of the pads, Well sort of, All I had at the time was a tube of black Castrol high temp grease, He said this can contaminate the pads causing them to crack, Which they have slightly, Even though there is still loads of wear left of them they do look a little shabby, So new pads and copper grease it is then. anyone else heard of this?

This must be the longest thread yet

yes, brakes will make noise without copper grease applied correctly. pads will crack from heat anyway (fine surface cracks) and also can become glazed which can also cause noise. as a freebie, you could try taking some emery cloth to the friction material to de-glaze them, cleaning the grease off with brake cleaner and copper greasing them

All sorted :-D New pads and copper grease done the job. Took it for a 50 mile run and not a sound, Im very happy. The old pads did not look too bad at all but there you go. Cheers everyone for the help :P
