Well it's back Always goes when brake pedal is gentle pressed and sometimes going over a bump can set it off again.

Here we go again After driving for about 1 mile the disc is really really hot but now it's devolved a new noise, It's banging and knocking from under the front right hand side, I have looked around and can not see anything out of place or loose. I have been told it's either the drive shaft, the bearings or the CV joint. Also the caliper does seem to be sticking. When driving it clunks and bangs and gets much worse when I turn, Feels like the car is falling apart. So apart from a new caliper should I order a drive shaft or CV kit (inner or outer) or bearings first? Im on a budget here and need the car back on the road ASAP. Help please before I buy a Rover

Who has diagnosed what it could be? A knocking CV joint sounds different to bearings? Get the car off the ground and turn the wheels, it will be easy to see which you need!

if you're on a budget, DON'T buy a rover!
i still think this is a wheelbearing. i think it is allowing the disc to run at and angle, so it is rubbing against the pads and getting hot. jack up car, grasp wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock it. you should feel the play. repeat at 6 and 12 o'clock, should be the same. rotate the wheel by hand, you should feel the roughness.

I wouldent really buy a Rover, I would rather walk Well I have opened up the old CV joint and it looks fine to me, It moves smoothly and the bearings inside look fine but I have noticed a bit of 'play' in the wheel bearing, It does move back and forth slightly although it seems to spin ok(ish). Problem I got is I have a new CV joint and wheel bearing here but no idea how to replace them. Anyone local fancy a job? Really need the car running again.

i actually quite like our mg (not badged as a rover, but still "built" by lazy brummies) even if it is a bit needy. just of for a shower now i've said that. somehow feel really dirty
iirc front bearings are described in the older issues of the haynes comic. newer ones tell you to take to vw.
a bearing separator is useful, as the inner race normally stays stuck to the hub
although you can just carefully go at it with a disc cutterand a super fine blade (you can use a thicker blade, but it takes longer and puts loads more heat into it)
press back together with a vice
or just take the complete hub assembly off yourself (remove balljoint, track rod end, 2x strut to hub bolts, caliper, carrier and disc) and take it to local garage with the bearing and get them to do it. only takes a few minutes, so if you ask really nicely they might do it there and then

Well I can not get the hub off, For some reason the track rod will not come out, Got the nut off but it will not move. Still have no idea whats causing the noise. So once again I have a useless car left to rot in my back garden. Well it was fun while it lasted.

Oh how right you are Marcus Well I managed to get the old CV joint off and fit the new one but that was not the problem, In fact im too embarrassed to say what it was Happy days.

Mate, don't be embarrassed, we're all friends here.
I bombarded the list at the end of last year with an ignition problem, turned out I'd correctly diagnosed it in the first place and replaced the offending component but was then stymied by something as simple as not clocking that the connecting pins on the ignition unit connector weren't connecting 'cos they were bent out of shape!

Well the knocking and banging noise turned out to be the front passenger side wheel being very very loose Strange thing is I have not had that wheel off in a long time so either it's worked it's way loose or someone did it for me, Anyway at least I now know how to change a CV joint now

Ball joint splitter is what you need to separate the track rod end ball joint, once off you may as well fit a new one as the rubber won't look too healthy once the splitter has had its wicked way with it! I got a splitter for about £8 off ebay.

The track rod came off after a couple of whacks with the rubber mallet All the rubbers are fine but over time I will replace them anyway. Thing is I dont understand is I have been no where near the left hand wheel so why it was loose is a mystery to me. Yep im feeling the love again, Just have to sort out the squeak now
