Squeaking brakes

Post by scirocco-monkey »

I fitted new brake pads and new discs to my Scirocco a few months ago but the right hand side sometimes squeaks when driving and always squeaks when turning right. I have taking everything off and cleaned and double cleaned but it's still doing it. It can be a bit embarrassing at times. Any ideas whats causing it? The left hand side is perfect.

Cheers all...Rich :P

Did you copper slip the back of the pads and the bits the end of the pad hooks into?

Yep I did all that. Just been out in it and it's still squeaking but only when I turn right, Maybe I should only turn left from now on

Flexis not snagging on something is it pulling the calliper over?
I had a scenario sim miler when I twisted up the flexi when putting the caliper back on pulling the calliper over slightly as you turn the wheel. Also check the backing plate behind the disk isn't rubbing on anything.

Right then, After removing everything and cleaning it all and putting fresh copper grease on the back of the pads the squeak is still there. I removed the guard as it was rotten. It still sqeaks but never when turning left, Sometimes when going foward and nearly always when turning right. Could it be a failing wheel bearing? It's driving me mad :dash:

CV joint, have you checked it? Get the car on axle stands and have a good poke around.

Ive checked everything and all looks ok to me. When I bought the car I replaced the discs and pads but the small screw that holds the disc in place wouldent come out so I had to drill it out, I replaced it with a nut and bolt (It's all I had at the time) but there was movement in the disc when the wheel was off so now I have fitted a proper bolt to it and it dont move anymore and it seems ok now (fingers crossed) I didnt think this would make any difference since the wheel holds the disc in place tight anyway.

You can leave the disc securing screw out altogether. It's just to hold the disc in place while you fit the wheel. The wheel bolts are actually hold it secure

Thats what I thought but it does seem to have made a difference, Im not holding my breath though. Wheel bearing next and hopefully the damn squeak will leave me alone.

OK the squealing is back with vengeance. It sounds like someone is sat next to me scraping their finger nails down a black board, It does it when I go foward, Left and right now. I pulled over early and noticed the discs are red hot, I take it this is not normal so im thinking the calipers are seized. Does this sound right?

It certainly does! You can get the rebuild kits and give them a good refurb.

I had red-hot discs, but that was because I over-adjusted the link rod.

Try taking the pads out and pushing the cylinder back in again, pop the pads in and press the pedal a couple of times then take them out and push the cylinder back again, put it all back together and see if that helps.

I tried that this morning and it's made no difference. A mate suggested that the discs could be warped, They are only about 1 year old but I swapped them around and the noise seems to have gone, This is baffling me now

If it's stopped making the noise problem solved, it might be worth bleeding a little of the brake fluid on the side which the disc got red hot as it can affect the brake fluid, you only need to bleed off a couple of pumps of the pedal.
