Re: whats the minimum....
i've always been told that you need more than the diameter of the bolt screwed in. so if your wheels are held on with M14 bolts you need at least 14mm screwed into the hub. bear in mind that although you might have enuf thread sicking out the back of the wheel, you also have to allow for the thickness of any disc, drum or wheel spacer between the top of the thread in the hub and the mating surface of the wheel.
that makes even less sense than your post

Re: whats the minimum....
lol. yup.
well basically i got some 20mm spacers with my new wheels with longer bolts, but the bolts are only 10mm longer than origanal, which are 29mm so these new ones are 39mm which would mean only 9mm of thread holding the wheels on instead of 19mm... doesnt seem much to me????
have not been driving the car with these on because paroniod that 9mms not enough and wheel will fall off??
looking at proper spacers with built in bolts but am skint!!! what you think???

not a tecchy but i'd say thats a bit borderline..............when i next get to car i'll check/measure and confirm the bolts on my d90's as fitted to scala you saw at santapod.

Re: whats the minimum....
i was told by a wheel specialist when i got my spacers 5mm more was the limit on standard bolts so any more than that will require longer bolts
i know its a pain but you may have to wait to get them on there safeley

cheers sean!! would rather do safely and will, but always breaks the bank
also if i put proper spacers with the bolts id have 13 bolts per wheel, 4 for the spacers, 4 for the adaptors and 5 for the wheel thats 52 bolts lol

Re: whats the minimum....
If you don't have enough thread engagement (ideally 1.5 x diameter of bolt) then the chances of the threads pulling out are greatly increased - not fun if it's wheel bolts you're talking about. If it was me, I'd get some longer bolts. Sorry buddy :(

Re: whats the minimum....
gotta agree. if you've got a 20mm spacer, you need 20mm longer bolts. this is assuming that it is a stock wheel you're fitting. a non-vw wheel may need longer bolts than oe anyways.
Re: whats the minimum....
You want a good 5 full turns on the thread for your wheels minimum.
remember places like Rallydesign do longer bolts and spacers for a darn sight cheaper than other places, even hubcentric stuff!

My tyre place recommends 6 full turns as a minimum. More is obviously ok, as long as the bolts are not too long that they foul rear drum brakes, for example.
