Horn not working

Post by walkinginperu »

As above, was working last week, but now seems not to be working at all. Checked connections under the cover on the steering wheel and all seem fine. Only discovered it this morning when some fool cut me up :diablo:
Any ideas?

When you press the horn button, can you hear the relay click?

If so, then you will have to get under the front of the car and check the connections at the horn itself. You will probalby have to clena the connections on the back of each horn and also in the two pin connector about four inches back from the horn. I am assuming that you have twin horns.

Thanks for that, PeteGLi. Don't think I can hear a relay clicking. I have the steering wheel with 4 buttons and there are 2 horns under the front of the car. I'll clean up the connections tonight and see if that works.

look down the back of the engine, there will be an earth wire going from the body shell to the rack. [earth wires are usually brown on cars, and a switched earth usually brown with either a white or black tracer.]

check the wire isn't broken and make sure that the ends are free from corrosion, clean and tight. worth taking them off and giving them a quick tickle with some fine emery cloth

Nope. Found the earth lead as you suggested, Nate, all intact, gave it a clean up and no joy. Fuse is OK, connections under the cover on the steering wheel all seem to be in place. I'm stumped :dunno:

Tried swapping the relay over just in case its the cause? Mine had started working intermittently and would decide to work on its own as i turned round corners, changed the relay and it sorted it out :)

Run wires directly from the battery to the horns themselves to check that the horns work - just touch the contacts on the horns briefly. If the horns work on this test, then you will need to check the relay and all the wiring. Did you clean up the wiring connectors at the horns end?
