car not drawing fuel then cutting out.HELP

Post by dixy42 »

hey guys
more fuel issues for you to get ya brains around.
car will tick over fine and the inline filter will fill up normally but as soon as I go to pull away normally it will cut out.
if however I put my foot all the way to the ground and rev the beans off it it will pull away after a massive dip in the revs.once I have pulled away like this it will splutter for a second and then seems to burst into life. but every gear change and every stop I have to have my foot all the way down on the accelerator or it will cut out.....

I don't think its the manual fuel pump as that was replaced a few months ago with a brand new one.
im thinking its either a crushed or collapsed fuel line or some rust floating around in the tank?
I will get under the car tomorrow morning as it is wet and dark right now..
just thought I might get a couple of opinions first.
Thanks in advance guys.

Might help if you let us know car you have, fuel injection or carb?

If it is a carb look at the rubber gasket/flange under the carb they are prone to crack and let air in.
Whats the fuel filler neck like?

I used to get this when my dizzy timing was out.
Advanced it a bit solved the problem, might be something worth looking at.

How old are your HT leads? Get a friend round at nightime when its dark. Open the bonnet. Get your friend to rev the shit out of the engine and see if your leads are arcing. Check your dizzy to make sure your cap and rotor arm are clean and sparking properly. If not start from the fuel neck, check for holes and trace your steps back to the carb. Is the fuel pump gasket solid or are you having slight petrol leaks under pressure. How old are your fuel lines. If they are very old replace the lines from the fuel filter to the carb. Because they are more curved under pressure they will collapse inside blocking fuel as the lines collapse under pressure. Pain in the tits job. Good luck.
