mayo in the oil filler cap.
I've found mayo in the oil filler cap. I'm devastated.
Is this definitely head gasket failure? Id noticed white smoke on start up from exhaust but it cleared when warm so I just thought it was condensation in exhaust.
Now there is definite coolant mixing with oil.
What are my options and how much is going to cost me.

Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
If you are running coolant and not water this is probably not a leaking headgasket.stys0n84 wrote:I've found mayo in the oil filler cap. I'm devastated.

You should also then experience loss of coolant and even pressure build and bubbles in the coolant container.
If you do not drive very long distances but a lot of short ones you can get condensation in the engine which will set off on the filler cap.
Clean of the cap and drive the car warm to hot when you get home take of the cap and let it sit for half an hour, repeat this a few times and the sludge should get less.
Also changing the oil could help because the water 'how strange it may sound' dissolves into the oil and comes out when warm.

Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
I've had no loss of coolant and no bubbles in the coolant. I thought it to be the head gasket due to the mayo on oil filler cap, loss of power in 5th going up steep hills or hard acceleration.

I've changed the oil a few hundred miles ago. I'll try the leaving the oil filler cap off see if that helps.

Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
Normal for mayo on filler cap if you are not doing many miles (less than 4 miles) or alot of start stop driving at this time of year. Also white smoke from exhuast is normal, I get loads when its cold or damp.
Take the car for a long run 30 minutes at least, get it nice and warm oil at least 80c upwards and give don't change gear till at least up to 5000rpm. This should clear out all the water from the oil and you should see the mayo go from the filler cap.

Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
Take it to your local garage and ask them to do a quick sniff test. Shouldn't cost much and only takes a few minutes. Assuming this comes back negative, search (google or the forum, I'm sure I posted it before) for vacuum gauge engine diagnostics
Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
Hi Nate, I tried a latex glove over the the coolant expansion tank and ran the car for a few mins and it didn't fill with gas.
A question about doing compression test what's the easiest way to stop fuel flowing? Is there a relay I can pull for the fuel pump?

There is a fuel pump relay. The Haynes shows the location.

I've found the Haynes a pain in the backside. You get half way through the engine section then there is a two page advert for body filler! Is the fuse box diagram at the back with wiring diagrams? As I haven't been able to find it in the Haynes yet? Is it 42.09? That seems to be the number on the side of the relay being sold on vwheritage

Re: mayo in the oil filler cap.
if you do have oil and water mixing it could be the oil cooler as thats the other point that the 2 could mix and they can fail
but if its just a bit of mayo in the cap as others have allready said its probably just condensation build up and should clear if you take it out for a long run just keep an eye on the temp gauge just in case

There is a detailed diagram of the fuses and relays in the electrical section, I don't have my Haynes to hand so can't check the page number.stys0n84 wrote:I've found the Haynes a pain in the backside. It's okay I've persisted and found it in the back of the Haynes. It's number '2' relay.
