Rear Drum Noise
Hello everybody!
Ive been battling with my mk1 gls trying to get it to pass an mot and in the process have replaced the majority of the breaking system. The fun part was finding out that the rear shoes had been replaced at some point with the wrong part and bodged to fit!
I now have all the correct parts fitted but there is a noise coming from the drums when you turn the wheels. It sounds as if the drum is touching some part of the fitting kit or handbrake cable as it's definitely got a springy kind of sound to it. There seems to be no difference to the sound no matter how you adjust the shoes, (it's got the early manual adjuster). I
At this point I'm a bit stuck, I spent a good few cold hours in the workshop the other night taking both sides apart and had not a great deal of success!
Does anybody know if the backplates are vastly different across the various mk1 dubs? (it's the only bit I haven't replaced)
Any thoughts on this would be gratefully received!
Thanks very much.

Hi,
Yes that's the system I've got, the shoes I removed were the later ones that had been modified to fit. I haven't replaced the U springs yet.

Re: Rear Drum Noise
The big U spring is whats keep the shoes together at the top onto the wheel cyinder so thats why you are getting the rubbing noise. Once you fit all the springs and clips the noise should go away, if you need anymore pictures of what should be fitted let me know.

Sorry, I meant that the U spring is the only bit I haven't replaced with a new part, they seem hard to come buy. With the u spring in place the noise is there!
Thanks very much for the replies!

Re: Rear Drum Noise
Mines still the original U clips from 1978! Seems to still work.
Have you got all the springs/clips in place and the little S shapped clip which holds the handbrake cable in place?
Can you post up a picture?
(you need a photobucket account and copy and paste in the IMG code from the picture into your message)

Re: Rear Drum Noise
Check the length of your wheel bolts.
Now you have the right brake shoes in they may be a bit wider and the wheelbolts could be hitting them
which will also give you the springy noise because everything is held in place by the springs.
So take of the wheel and then check the ends of the wheelbolts and turn the drum whithout the wheel.

I'd second that. I had the same when I changed my wheels a few years back.Blueshark wrote:Check the length of your wheel bolts.

Re: Rear Drum Noise
Well there you go, it was indeed the wheel bolts poking through the drum! Thanks very much for your help everybody.
Just need to get the thing running nice and smooth now!
