Petrol tank seal under rear seat
HI Everyone
I have just been told by the guy i bought my scirocco off that he could never fill it up over half way because of some issue with the petrol tank seals.
he said fuel used to leak if filled anything over half way.
does anybody know what part number/ type of seal to look for? or would it be best to swap for a new tank??
thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Petrol tank seal under rear seat
Do you mean the rubber gasket that fits under the sender unit that is located under the rear seat? If it is then these are still available from the dealers, cost about a fiver.

Re: Petrol tank seal under rear seat
i think thats what he meant. what i got in the text was
"the seal on the petrol tank under the back seat"
so i would assume that is what he was talking about as i cannot find any information on any other type of seal being there..
forgot to mention 1985 Scirocco 1.6GT Sorry new to the forum and still finding my feet!

Re: Petrol tank seal under rear seat
There are no other seals under the rear seat. Your local dealer probably will not have it in stock but can order on a next day delivery.
Easy to fit, just twist off (anti-clockwise bayonet fitting) the sender unit after disconnecting the fuel pipes and electrical fitting.

Re: Petrol tank seal under rear seat
I would be inclined to suggest that over half filling will not leak from the top sender seal, more likely to be the horizontal seams between top and bottom halves of the tank are leaking due to corrosion. My last Scirocco was like that and gave the same symptoms if overfilled, it will smell of petrol externally also and a crawl underneath will show where it is leaking from. Solution - live with it and don't fill higher than half full or get a new tank as a repair is out of the question.

If it is this then a new tank is the only way to go. When I bought my Scala it leaked from the seams (as well as the fuel lines!), a new tank (and fuel lines) were purchased rather quickly!go-for-it1 wrote:I would be inclined to suggest that over half filling will not leak from the top sender seal, more likely to be the horizontal seams between top and bottom halves of the tank are leaking due to corrosion. That is a 55 litre tank. VW Heritage show then at over £350! I would be looking elsewhere, I got mine from GSF, it was £135 with club discount 5 years ago!
Shop around if you need a new tank.

Re: Petrol tank seal under rear seat
After 1984 the Scirocco was fitted with a 55 litre fuel tank. A quick and easy check is to look at your spare wheel, if it is a spacesaver you have a 55 litre tank!
