I came across this detailed list of fusebox connections recently, might be worth pinning or putting in the links section, despite being from a site dedicated to A2 platform cars, it seems identical to what's in my Mk2.

Thanks once more to ThomasD - I managed to eliminate quite a lot of excess wiring (84GTI loom in a mk1) and now have a working tacho for the first time! It turns out someone had connected a +12v to the tach feed [insert Ginger smiley here].

Thanks to Marcus for the A2 resource link - I used it to trace another stray wire - a yellow wire for the high oil pressure switch.

Now I just to have recut, resolder and heatshrink all the wires under the dash and sort all this lot out -

After that I'll strip all the engine bay loom of excess bits and fit all new headlamp connectors.
