Mk1 steering column replacement

Post by chopperoli »

Hi,
On the old forum I was advised that the Mk2 Scirocco steering column and pedal box fits as a direct replacement in a Mk1, with the useful addition of a brake light switch. The latter is true, there is a pedal switch. So I went ahead on the advice from the forum members, But the geometry of the Mk2 design is such that the top bracket (with shear head bolts) is actually about 20mm too low on the Mk2 unit (different angles?) , meaning that fitted in a Mk1 the steering wheel will sit that much lower and requires a spacer of some description at the top. Which is no good! Unless you space the wheel towards the driver also- which is not easy.
I'll let you know how I get round this- where's the welder?
