V.A.G Trophy Race - Cadwell

Post by Ian Carvell »

I can't believe it....my trusty old 140k road car finished 4th overall and 1st in Class B in both races!!!!!

Check these out...they are from the car following me in race 2 (MK2 Golf GTI championship car).
Race 2 Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_2QivNdp-k
Race 2 Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeC_jYcjFm4

Its a 140k Mk2 GT2 on standard springs and dampers, standard brakes, pagid pads from GSF, totally standard bottom end, but with PB head, cam, weber DMTL and 4 branch....the whole car stands me at £1300 (but seat and extinguisher were from my old Mk2 so probably £1600 in real terms)

Proper cheap fun!!!!

Maybe get the 16v engine ready soon to give the VR6's a run for thier money :-)

Just watched both vids - really frantic stuff
The mountain section at the end of the lap looks like something else.

It is amazing through there....its a bit more difficult on standard springs and dampers because it is a bit slower to respond, but fantastic fun!!!!

I just found myself hanging onto my dining room chair watching that. Brilliant!

Well...I have had no time to do any decent prep work for the weekend, but I did manage to change the rear brake shoes so I have rear brakes now...

I also managed to make up some spacers to slip the rear dampers up through the body a little. Hopefully that will preload the rear suspension a little to improve the balance on the entry to Gerrards.

Looking forward to racing those 8v Mk2's again....and looking forward to seeing my dad in the "proper" Scirocco racecar take on the Class 'A' cars.

Silverstone is the next round after mallory this weekend and is going to be awesome...entries include:-
320bhp Corrado Turbo
380bhp Leon Cupra 'R'
310bhp Mk5 Golf TFSI
Ex-BTCC Audi Touring Car
300bhp Vento VR6

Things are starting to get serious....might have to finish off my 16v motor :nerner:

When I raced 2CVs we used to be able to do Gerards flat out. Is that possible in the Scirocco?

I managed to get my name in Autosport for my "spectacular roll" on the exit of Gerards which was caused by my rear suspension arm folding in under the car when I hit the gravel, pitching me from a spin into a roll.

The hairpin was my favourite overtaking point... all you needed to do was outbreak the other driver.

No its not flat, there is a brake for Gerrards, but is a very fast corner....well on in 4th gear, over 100mph I would think.

Do you still have the 2CV....I used to work with a guy who used to race in 2CV's a few years ago(James Grantham), the 24hr race looked mad!!!
