While troubleshooting my non-starter, I found this useful-looking resource about ignition system troubleshooting in general and the TCI-H system as fitted to VWs in particular. Haynes isn't as helpful on transistorized systems.
Admins, if this isn't the right forum, please move my post - I did look at 'electrical' but it didn't seem to cover this kind of stuff.
